Hidden among the coconut palms that line the beaches of San Pedro, Belize, the beauty of Xanadu Island Resort is undeniable… and its staff is committed to keeping it that way.

In 2010, Xanadu became one of three resorts in Belize to be certified by Green Globe for sustainability in travel and tourism. As part of that process, the resort's staff underwent training related to best management practices, their unique Environmental Management System and Green Globe Certification criteria.

A property audit was completed by International Center for Responsible Tourism (ICRT), Green Globe's partner in Belize. A few short weeks later, the certification became official.

"The owners, staff members and I are justly proud of our new distinction, and intend to live up to the role as mentor on Ambergris Caye as a Green Globe Certified Property and leader in the field," said Martin Goldberg, Xanadu's property manager and Green Team leader.

Xanadu stands out as a resort that has committed itself to community, nature, environment, guests and staff in equal measure.

A recent feature in the San Pedro Sun touted Xanadu as "a luxury beachfront resort in harmony with nature," and they were also featured on the cover of Travel & Leisure in March 2010 as one of the "Top 5 Best Deals in the Caribbean." In addition, the resort was one of the finalists for the Belize Tourism Board's Hotel of the Year Award.

Xanadu uses eco-friendly chemicals in its day to day operations; monitors electricity and water consumption; and has implemented measures to reduce water use on the property, minimize waste and limit negative impacts on the surrounding environment.

Low-flush toilets in all rooms and an on-site reverse osmosis filtration system are just a couple of the measures that have been implemented.

"In endorsing Xanadu for Green Globe Certification, ICRT-Belize director K. Raymark Theus wrote, "The International Centre for Responsible Tourism-Belize (ICRTBelize) proudly endorses Xanadu Resort as a prime example of what can be achieved in the best interest of tourism, best management practices and the environment when dedicated individuals, employees, managers and owners put the environment first and foremost.

"Green Globe Certification also commends Xanadu Resort in their dedication and practical approach to guest comfort, satisfaction, environmental stewardship and standards," Theus added.
