My doctor is recommeding we get typhoid shots, does anyone have any opinions about this? Recent visitors, did you get them? Any recent outbreaks on AC, we are only going to the mainland on the ruins trips.
We are all healthy....Also reccommends Hep A and malaria pills. I am really not looking forward to shots if I don't have to.
I'd like to hear what others have done.
Thanks

Hubby and I spent almost two weeks last month in AC...drank bottled water...brushed our teeth with water from the tap...did not get any shots or pills before we left...and stayed healthy! We enjoyed food from local restaurants... street vendors... as well as meals provided on trips to Lamini and the Blue Hole...Some say Belikins is the secret... but hubby does not drink...and he was fine! Don't worry...no problem! Enjoy!

If I had to get shots, I would have to second think my trip. No shots here. I drank the water everyday (Brought kool aid) adn did not get sick at all. Ate from the vendors and on all the trips to the mainland, not a sick day for me. We had people in our clan that took Pepto for precautions, but no one got any shots.

Enjoy!

I do spend the time and money to go to the health department and get any shot that they suggest, as I do travel a lot to third word or developing countries, even though contracting many of those diseases are somewhat remote you can still get them. If I recall the typhoid will take about 50% of the time, so in other words it is not a sure thing and it quite spendy, infection is spread directly from person to person or through contaminated food or water but is mainly spread from mosquitoes, but with the strong trade winds of AC I did not see a mosquito and you may by quite safe. The malaria shot should be given about 5wks before leaving, if you do not have the time you can get a fast acting short term shot known as a 'Gamma' shot which is a little more costly but protects almost as good. As far as the HepA is conserned everybody should get that, even if they don't leave the states, it hits may areas without warning, it only takes one resturant worker to get it and pass it along to anybody.

If any of you hard core beer drinkers care about your liver just think what a disease of this nature will do for you.

You can do what you want or what the people suggest, but I think it is a snall price to pay for the rest of my life.

Took my kids last year and had them take hepatitis shots before we left, but they were going to have to have them for school anyway, so I went ahead and did it. Not necessarily because I HAD to.....
