Collecting a dead dog from the street
Capturing a stray dog

We often notice and complain about the things that bother or annoy us, but we also take for granted the things that make our life safer, happier and more pleasant. Whether you like animals or not, living in San Pedro, you will encounter dogs and cats daily. Responsibly owned pets are a benefit to the community but unfortunately there are still some irresponsible owners who allow their animals to breed or stray.

Stray dogs and cats used to be poisoned in San Pedro. This was extremely upsetting to animal lovers and pet owners who lived locally and to tourists, who heard about or experienced an 'eradication'. This was not good for the animals or the people of San Pedro. So, what happens now?

SAGA Humane Society have an army of volunteers who help to keep our streets safe and clean. They are truly animal 'angels' but the work they do often goes unnoticed. SAGA Humane Society is an important community organisation providing a range of essential services.

SAGA do regular stray dog round ups and help to trap wild and abandoned cats so that the Town Board do not have to take the time and expense to do so. Each month SAGA provides them with statistics showing the positive impact they have on our island. Right now, SAGA is caring for 42 dogs & puppies and 20 cats & kittens. Tragically only 16 dogs and cats were adopted in the last two months from SAGA.

They deal with complaints about nuisance animals dealing with everything from noise and barking issues to dog bites and feral cat infestations. They also deal with calls about wildlife and often rehabilitate wild animals that are brought in with injuries. Sadly, someone also has to pick up the bodies of animals killed in road traffic accidents - and that service is also left to SAGA.

SAGA receives no government funding and they work very closely with other groups locally and internationally to ensure that they are providing the best quality of service with properly trained staff and helpers. Without the cooperation and assistance of groups such as the World Society for the Protection of Animals and the Humane Society of the United States, SAGA would be unable to play such a vital role in our day to day lives.

So the next time you see a healthy dog in San Pedro or notice how clean our streets are, remember that SAGA Humane Society are our own animal 'angels', swooping in to care for our island animals.

Pop in to visit the SAGA team and let them know how much you appreciate everything they do for San Pedro. While you're there, please think about adopting an animal. If you want to help please call SAGA on 226 3266. Even angels' need a helping hand sometimes.

PLEASE ADOPT US!

Hello, we are Ziggy and Zara - brother and sister and are in need of a new home. We are 1 year old and have all our injections and are very healthy (and house-trained!)
We were rescued from a trash can in Corozal when we were just 3 weeks old and nursed back to health by our lovely adoptive human mum and dad. This was a tough period - our humans even had to teach us how to suckle milk from a syringe. We then made a big move to San Pedro and have lived here ever since.
Now our lovely mum and dad are moving to England and although we want to go too we can't afford our airfare and so are looking for a new permanent home.

Please adopt us! We are very loving and well-behaved. We love affection and have even learnt how to live alongside dogs (but only if they know who's boss). We also keep any house clear of lizards (our favourites), frogs (a delicacy), cockroaches and any problem critters - we are the super cats!
To meet us please call our mum on 661-0058 or email her at [email protected], we look forward to meeting you soon.

Love Saga. When my husband and I were there last month, we had a couple of dogs that would follow us along the beach at night. They became our dogs, even if just for the day. We loved having them around, and even tried to fatten one up! We found out from a local that he is recieving heartworm treatment from Saga - I doubt he will make it (judging by his current looks), but I am SO grateful that during his life he was able to be loved and cared for in some way.

Getting to know some of the local stray dogs was a pleasure, and I'm so glad that Saga helps them out (and the cats, too - but I didn't see any while we were there!). Thank you so much for everything you do!!! Can you take donations online?

What are some ways that people can help out SAGA? We just moved here and would like to get involved. When we were getting our passports stamped, they mentioned that we can't volunteer unless we pay....could you clarify that please?
