The famous Burrell Boom Restaurant was roughed up and jacked last night before closing. El Chiclero Inn's owners were badly brutalized last evening at around 10 pm. More on the news tonight

Armed Robbery Of Octogenarian In Burrell Boom

If you like restaurants off the beaten path you may know of the El Chiclero Inn which sits right at the western entrance to Burrell Boom. It's a quiet spot in a quiet village but last night city-style violence was visited on the establishment. According to police, around 8 45 a man with a firearm entered the place at closing time, when only the owner, 80 year old Karl Faulkner and his wife were in the upstairs portion of the building.

According to police, the assailant went up with the firearm and started clubbing 70 year old Mary Lynn Faulkner in the head with the weapon.

The owners handed over $350 and added that the robber got away with a lap top as well. The armed robber left on bicycle. No arrests have been made.

from a friend....

I am saddened to find out that Dr. Faulkner and his Mart wife were beaten and robbed last week.

In case you all do not know, Dr. Otho Faulkner was one of the first orthodontists in Belize.

The couple migrated to Belize many years ago from the U.S. Otho is 80 and Mary 70.

After he retired he opened the El Chiclero Lodge at Burrel Boom.

Well liked and loved by the community and lots of friends.

I always eat at El Chiclero when I can as the Faulkners treat me well to the point of doting.

When Emory was alive that was our hangout once a month.

I believe this will cause these fine folks to leave the country.

Their kids never did like it here and had no plans to take over the business.

I just stumbled on this post while searching for Dr. Faulkner's place. We are thinking about taking a cruise and making a circle, Belize Zoo, Prison Gift Shop, El Chiclero, Altun Ha and then back to the ship (or vice versa).

I met Dr. Faulkner about six years ago. We were unaware that there were restaurants in the second floor of the airport and so drove over to Burrell Boom after checking our bags for a quick lunch. After chatting with Mrs. Faulkner for a minute we realized they were from "Memphis." A couple of minutes more and we learned Dr. Faulkner was the brother of a friend of ours from our hometown, and in fact had at one time had a plantation in our home county as a young man.

At the time Belize got its independence Dr. Faulkner had several thousand acres of land. He sold this off over the years leaving him only the inn. Based on my conversation with him, at one time he knew everyone and people wanting to do business would hire him to take them around and introduce them to folks. The inn has been for sale for several years. Dr. Faulkner is going to have to just let it go for whatever it gets if he wants to go back to the U.S.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. He and his wife are kind people. I wish both of them well.
