Twenty-eight Belizeans were honoured last night at The Bliss Center in this year's Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony. The recipients include:

For meritorious service:

Belizario R. Carballo,
Joel DARA Robinson
Wilfred E. L. Nicholas, Sr. and Carlton L. Fairweather,
Both posthumously, Fr. John J. Stochl,
Lillian August, Adelia Young, Olga Blades, Sharon Matola
Deanna E. Nisbet, Myrna D. Pitts among many others.

The order of Distinction went to the great Parandero Paul Nabor - for his contribution to culture and music and Lawrence Vernon, For contributions to the development of the Belize National Library Service.

And the night's highest honour, the Order of Belize went posthumously to Edward A. Laing - the preeminent Belize international jurist who received his award for contributions to law.

On Thursday, September 15th, the Prime Minister of Belize, Hon Dean Barrow, honoured twenty-eight distinguished Belizeans at the Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony at the Bliss Center for Performing Arts.

The Prime Minister said that the Tribute to Belizean Patriots is always one of the events he looks forward to during the September celebrations. The PM said that the men and women being honoured represent the true spirit of Belize. He said, “Among them is a distinguished judge of the international tribunal for the laws of the sea… We also have a musical icon who has brought international recognition and appreciation for the Paranda music. There are several former and present educators, retired public servants, community workers, social activists and one of Belize’s best known conservationists.”

The national Honours and Awards Act was passed on August 16th, 1991. It says that each year honours and awards may be conferred to individuals, living or dead, who may have rendered outstanding and meritorious service to Belize.The Order of Belize was bestowed posthumously upon Edward A. Laing for his contributions to law. Mrs. Marjorie Laing, who is an active member of Belize’s Diaspora, received the award on her husband’s behalf. The Order of Distinction awards were presented to Paul Nabor and Lawrence Vernon. Nabor received the award for contributions to culture and music. Lawrence Vernon received the award for contributions to the development of the Belize National Library Service.

Twenty five individuals received Meritorious Service Award this year. Those honourees are Lillian August for contributions to nursing and community service, Adelia E. Young for contributions to nursing, Juana I. Terry for contributions to student support, Gloria M. Stuart for contributions to community service, Sharon Matola for contributions to education and the preservation of wildlife, Deanna E. Nisbet for contributions to education, Martha Lopez for contributions to community service, Myrna D. Pitts for contributions to education and community work, Sister Therese, S.A.C. for contributions to music education, Elda M. Vega for contributions to education and community service, Sylvia Manderson for contributions to the Belizean Diaspora in the USA, Bernadette M. Cornejo for contributions to community service and education, Clifford D. W. Atkins for contributions to agriculture, Darius Avila for contributions to culture and economic development, Belizario R. Carballofor contributions to education, Frederick P. Garcia for contributions to education, agriculture, and sports, Joel ‘DARA’ Robinson for contributions to social work, Theodore Palacio for contributions to the development of teacher education, Fr. John J. Stochl, S.J. for contributions to education and Frank A. Symns for contributions to the community. Five individuals received Meritorious Service Awards posthumously. They are Olga Blades for contributions to the community, Carrie E. Belgrave for contributions to the arts, culture, and community development, John L. Dueck for contributions to business and social development, Wilfred E. L. Nicholas, Sr. for contributions to sports and Carlton L. Fairweather for contributions to public service and the uniformed services.

The individuals honoured continue to serve as examples for the rest of Belizeans.
