In his Independence Day speech the Prime Minister of Belize mentioned that there are proposals for 4 new call centers to operate in Belize. The first of those are just about ready to start business and the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (Beltraide) has collaborated with the Ministry of Education to design a course for individuals interested in working at these call centers.

The first session for the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) specialist certificate program will be held at the ITVET building in Belize City from October 31st to November 11th. The training program runs from 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening. It is based on modules developed to meet international standards and according to a press release by Beltraide, "After fully completing the program individuals will be guaranteed a job by the end of the year, 2011."

There is a $50 registration and certification fee. Beltraide has set the minimum wage for certified BPO specialists at $5 an hour. Individuals most equipped for the program are those between the ages of 17 and 65 who are fluent in English and have a comfortable knowledge of computer and internet operations. The individual should be able to work flexible hours and possess great communication skills and work ethics.

Sessions will also be held in Belmopan City and San Ignacio Town. The sessions will be held at the ICT Center in Belmopan and the CET building in San Ignacio from November 7th to 18th and November 21st to December 2nd. A second session will also be held at the ITVET compound in Belize City from November 14th to 25th.

The first call center will hire 250 employees. Those skeptical of the program need not be concerned because the program is more regulated than those established earlier and the BPO certificates are permanent documents. It is the most rewarding $50 investment one can make at this time - simply because "JOBS ARE GUARANTEED BY THE END OF THE YEAR."

I'm curious...if internet is so slow and expensive in Belize and long distance is so high in cost (and Skype etc. are blocked), what kind of call centres are now considering opening up in Belize?

I suppose since the gov alledgedly controls the phone company they must get better rates...and just because BTL doles out the bandwidth by the pinch and charge by the bushell, doesnt mean there isnt a backbone available for someone to tap into...

For all of those who frequently ask what a good paying job here on the Island..... these call center positions are $5/ hour. Our housekeeper and gardner are getting 2-3 times that wage.

Tangles,
The jobs are in Belize and pay is in Belize dollars.

Real Estate is quoted in US dollars but that is exception.
