We spent one week in Belize. Two nights at duPlooy's near San Ignacio... I'll post my comments about that on another part of the board... and five nights at the Paradise Villas in San Pedro. Rather than post a "blow-by-blow" account of our trip here's just a few things that stayed with me:
:-) The people. Just lovely and gentle and fun. You could feel the pride they had in their country and how grateful they were to share it with you.
:-) The ocean. What a treasure to have out your back door and I just kept thinking how I'd like to continue to enjoy that for many years to come. We did a catamaran trip with Hustler (Stephen and Ralph) to Hol Chan, Caye Caulker and Shark Ray Alley. Stephen gave a great "save the reef" talk before our first snorkle. Saw the hugest groupers I'd ever seen there (sorry, I ate one of your cousins later in the week) and mostly Rays at S/R (sharks had all been fed in a.m., I think)... just beautiful creatures. Then went out several days later with Sea Wolf, just the four of us, to Mexico Rocks! Wow! The coral, sea fans and sponges in such beautiful condition. And, we saw two of the most enormous star fish.... a new experience for me. Oh, we also saw two manatee on our way to Caye Caulker... serendipity!
:-) The food. Except for a few places it was quite good and a great prices. I want to make special mentions of Lily's. We ate there every morning but one (we did Estel's one morning and it didn't compare) and the Huevos Rancheros were the best....but, the real treat was the Lobster Omelet. To die for! Service so friendly and sweet. We love Lily's! Jambel Jerk Pit... AWESOME! Don't miss it! My mouth tingled from the jerk chicken but I was so happy. Sweet Basil, a little pricier, but you can't beat this for the best late lunch on the island and the experience of taking the hand ferry over is priceless. Had dinner our last night at Capricorn. Just magical from the minute we stepped on the water taxi. The food was good (it's not cheap) the service was first rate and the taxi ride home on the dark ocean, the stars in abundance, moon rising and lightening playing on the horizon. Burned in my memory forever.
:-) Our location. Paradise Villas was a great location. Close to everything (just on north edge of San Pedro), but small enough to be quiet. Great pool and the condos are in good condition and nicely decorated. We thought it was a good choice considering how overwhelming the choices were.
So, that's it, in a nutshell. There's so much more, of course, but as they say "you'd have to be there". It's a charming place and really gets under your skin in a good way. We're so grateful it's only a 2-1/2 hour flight from Houston to Belize City... we can make it a place for long weekends.
Thank you, Ambergris Caye! We love you!
