we are looking at bringing down a sailboat to ambergris but we have noticed a lot of cats and not to many traditional sailboats
we have a choice between a trailerable swing keel type boat or a fixed keel boat with say a shoal keel with a draft of 4 feet
any thoughts or advice would be helpful
also shipping for boats from miami has any one had any experience?

I think 4 feet is definitely pushing it considering where you will be sailing (north).

Please read under the Travel Forum, Sailing in Belize. I used to live in the wide deep Chesapeake, and I believe we invented shoal draft (oystering industry). I had a Tartan 27 with a swing keel...3ft 6in, with the board up, 6 ft with the board down. The board would never be down here unless outside the reef. Advice? Enjoy Cat sailing!

I'm no expert but have looked at A LOT of boats and getting them here. Hyde is the one who ships via sea from Miami and it cost a fortune, I forget how much but it's a lot! It's cheaper to hire a captain to sail it down which will be $5,000+US. Cuba, Cancun, Belize.

Duty has to be paid if your boat is here for longer then 30 days a pop, but you can always take it out of the country to avoid that.

Monohulls have a draft that's usually too deep here. You want 3' or less, unless you're staying outside of the reef. I've seen a few boats that have adjustable drafts, forget what it's called but they go from 2.5'-6'. Placencia and further south you see a lot more mono hulls as the reef is 20+ miles from the mainland, but there's still lots of coral around.

All of ours have at least 4.5" and we have no issues.

thanks for all the input ,it does help
Gives us a little more to ponder
SimonB doyou use your cats predominantly outside the reef or are you able to navigate relatively freely inside the reef?

90% of the time is spent inside the reef.
