A string of burglaries have been reported on Ambergris Caye.

Maria Novelo reporting...
"Opportunistic thieves are becoming a common occurrence on the island in
this time of year. Over the last week, a rise in burglaries has been
reported by residents and tourists alike. As Ambergris Caye gears
up for the Christmas holidays, the disturbing trend is taking a toll on the
welcoming island charm. Officer commanding the San Pedro Police is Ernell
Dominguez who says they are closing in the perpetrators on a case by case
basis.

Ernell Dominguez - Officer Commanding, San Pedro Police
"What we have realized and there are two things for us to look at very
closely even though we have lots of complaints about laptop being stolen,
some of the complaints to us may not from what we have recollected, may not
be of a genuine nature meaning that some of these laptops especially there
are some of the tourists from different countries from time to time, they
report to Police that there has been a burglary and there has been a laptop
stolen sometimes we have recovered the laptop. I believe that there is some
demand by some handler, somebody who is handling these stolen goods because
if there is no handler then there would be no theft."

One of the complaints from residents is the unavailability of transport for
the officers and with a booming population of over twenty thousand, human
resources can also be seen as lacking.

No offence intended here but I'm having trouble understanding what the guy was trying to say. Is anyone able to help me out?

The mainreason that we are seeing burglaries up at the moment is because of the holidays there is a greater market for stolen electronics. The stolen goods handlers make their orders and the thieves fill the orders by stealing from homes where they know they can find the items.

Many of the stolen items claims are false, made by tourists that are trying to scam their insurance companies.

The police are working on each case piecing together which ones are true or false.

There is a lack of transportation for the officers to move around as much as they need to considering the size of the area that needs to covered and number of residents that need to be protected.
