News has been received of the death of retired police officer Norman Gilbert Simplis, the first, OBE. Simplis’ biographical date shows a career of public service spanning several decades. Simplis, who was born in Punta Gorda town, joined the Belize Police Force in 1941 and served in postings country-wide until his promotion to the rank of inspector when he returned to Belize City. His family says that when Simplis was assigned to Port and Airport duties, he earned several commendations for his devotion to hard work and discipline. The most famous incident of his long career in the police was arresting and detaining the notorious Francisco Sagastume who “invaded” Belize from Guatemala.
Norman Simplis is the father of seventeen children, including the wife of the Prime Minister Kim Simplis Barrow. He was recently bestowed with an honor by Her Majesty the Queen. Norman Gilbert Simplis, the first. Dead at age 92.
