A midmorning blaze completely destroyed a small house in the DFC area, which has left a family homeless in the New Year. Shortly after 11a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012, the San Pedro Fire Department was alerted about the fire which the residents of the DFC area started battling before the fire truck arrived.

The small two-story structure was located behind Bessy's Store and was completely engulfed in flames by the time the fire truck arrived. Residents in apartments next to the blaze, including owners of Bessy's Store, were panicking to save their personal belongings and store contents as the fire threatened to cross over. Luckily a large concrete wall separated the buildings and prevented the fire from spread.

Fire Rages in San Pedro's DFC Area

On my way to town today...at about 11.30am, we spotted large plumes of black smoke rising from the back side of the island. We turned around and followed the fire trucks and police back to DFC where a fire consumed the back of a wooden house/business. The business is called Bessy's Store, a once pretty pink and purple building.

Firemen, who were quickly on the scene, pouring all the water from the fire truck into the blaze. They were up on the roof with hoses to try to get water on the burning home. It quelled the flames for a bit but more help was needed.

Family, friends and neighbors were trying to pull first people and then as much furniture as possible out the front of the house.

Finally, a bucket brigade formed of really brave men who at first filled buckets from hoses and taps and then from the swampy area on an adjacent lot.

The worked fast and furious to put the fire out.

From Tia Chocolate:

"very sad indeed - on Monday, the San Pedro Lions Club will be accepting donation drop-offs - a lot of clothing will probably be donated, so think outside of the box and include items like soap, deodorant, shampoo, sanitary products, toilet paper, toothbrushes and toothpaste...items of that nature. There was a toddler-age little girl as well, so perhaps some diapers, and definitely children's clothes. Ages range from toddler (perhaps age 2?) to around 10...any items donated will be greatly appreciated..."

OFFICIALS RELEASE FINDINGS ON SAN PEDRO FIRE

San Pedro Fire authorities have found out the cause of the fire that
totally consumed the homes of two adults and four children on Saturday in
San Pedro Town. Officer in Charge of the Fire Station, Ernest Dominguez
spoke with Love News this morning and gave us this update.

Ernest Dominguez - Officer in charge, San Pedro Fire Dept
"The files revealed that the fire started from two minors playing with
fire.

Maria Novelo - Reporter
How does the department handle case like this?

Ernest Dominguez - Officer in charge, San Pedro Fire Dept
"In cases as such the persons who start that is more a line for social
services, in the case."

Maria Novelo - Reporter
I understand you had problems extinguishing the fire because you ran out of
water?

Ernest Dominguez - Officer in charge, San Pedro Fire Dept
"The truck we have holds 400 gallons of water and when it is finished it is
finished. After the water was finished we had to find alternative source.
I the case of the fire the kids were at home without any adult
supervision."

The unfortunate incident was one that could have been prevented and
according to officer commanding the San Pedro police, Dennis Arnold the
fire victim and mother of the child will be charged with child neglect and
endangerment.

Dennis Arnold - Officer in Charge, San Pedro Police
"A child under 12 years old cannot commit an offence. The children who
were home at the time were all under 10 years so I guess that the parents
will have to bear the consequence."

While the fire damaged both structures entirely and all its contents
inside, the families suffered a completely loss as it was not insured. But
like many situations where families are in need, the community of San Pedro
have banded to assist the families with clothing and food items. The San
Pedro Lions club facilitated a clothing drive for the family on Monday.

I think they've already had to "bear the consequence". Hope there's more reason to charge mom. Unsupervised, under 10YO. Never have seen that on the streets of San Pedro.

there is just something that rankles me about the enforcement actions here considering the larger violations that plainly exist on the island and go on without consequence...

How about pumping from that big ocean or lagoon down the street to the fire scene, I bet that would give them plenty of water.

Grandmother To Be Charged For DFC Fire

Investigations have revealed that two minors were playing with a lighter in the two storey building when clothes caught on fire, which then quickly spread onto the rest of the house. The two storey building belonged to Lorena Montez, 24-year-old, Belizean domestic worker, who at the time of the fire was not at home and had left her children in the care of her mother, Rosa Perez.

The children were left unsupervised and reliable sources tell that the grandmother, Rosa Perez will be charged with criminal charges including child neglect and endangerment.
