I will be staying at Matachica in early October. I'm an avid fisherman and am really looking forward to doing some Tarpon fishing while on AC. I have spoken to the folks at Matachica and they tell me that they will be glad to set up a guide for me while I am there- I plan to fish 2 or 3 days. If past experiences are any indication, guides provided by hotels/resorts are not always the best or most economical guides available. In a nutshell-who are the best Tarpon guides and how do I get in touch with them prior to leaving? Thanks in advance.

Don't Tarpon Fish - just reef fish but if you do a search on this board for Tarpon fishing you will get many personal stories and guides names.
Belize it!

I can attest that mr Pete Graniel and Mr Carlos Marin are both great guides. Their names are in the book. Good luck!!

Nesto Gomez is an incredible fly fisherman! He works out of El Pescador.
[email protected] Reef fishing does not compare to bone or tarpon!!

Thanks for the help. In the area of coastal South Carolina where I live we are primarilly conventional tackle fishermen. I can throw a fly rod if I must, but would prefer to use spinning gear. Will these guides be willing to do this-and do I need to bring my own rods, tackle etc? Thanks in advance.

Hey Gamec....
I just returned from AC on AUg 9th and did some wondeful Tarpon/Bonefish/Permit fishing. My friend had a grand slam the first day. Many hook ups on Tarpon but few landed, thats the way sometimes. We stayed at El Pescador(Northern AC) and the service was incredible. It was their off season but still the hospitality was great.
All of the guides there are incredible. Carlos(our guide) is a very patient man to deal with us learning "how to" in such a short time.
Some days are hot with fish, others are not so good.
Fly fishing is your greatest bet for hooking up. Hope you can "double haul" a 12 weight rod cuz thats all that can handle the big ones. . I hooked up to one in spinning gear but it was a a mishap.
All in all, try for Tarpon but if the weather is uncooperative, then Bones(8 wt. gear) are the next best thing.
Enjoy
