Coming back to the great island for another break from winter. I was wondering where there is free internet on Caye Caulker. I did have some passwords stored in my "smart" phone from last year but I had to replace it. So if anyone would like to share passwords that would be nice also. Thanks

Internet access on CC is very expensive. Some of the eateries like Paradisio sandwich shop offer free WIFI to their customers as a courtesy. Many of the rental properties also offer WIFI as part of their package. Be respectful and patronize the establishments that provide you with "free" WIFI.

I had the same question myself. The house we are staying at says they have wifi but I'm curious to see how well it will work.

Anyone down there know how well an I-phone data package with Verizon will work? Minnesota 28, what service do you have and did it work well on the island?
Arrive next Thursday, can't wait.

Wisconsin Diver, We did not use my phone as a cell phone on a network while in Belize. We kept them on airplane mode and used them on WIFI only. There are many resturaunts that offer free WIFI when asked for a password. MikeD, I am not trying to steal WIFI from not patronizing these establishments. I do not bring a laptop and sit in front of a resturaunt to follow my work E-mails and steal WIFI. I figure if I pay for their high priced meals I should be able to stop for a moment and check to see how our children and parents are doing back home.

The Wifi that comes with your rental house or at a village restaurant is likely to be basic BTL DSL. It will be slower than what you're used to at home but is fine if you're not in a hurry. And not being in a hurry is what Caye Caulker is all about! You will be able to upload photos, but it will take awhile. Graphics heavy websites may load a bit slowly. Don't expect to be able to stream video. Sorry, I don't know anything about accessing the internet from cell phones.

The farther away from the village the slower it tends to be. And maybe due to usage patterns or for whatever reason, to me it seems faster in the morning than later in the day or at night.

Have a great visit!

I agree Noelle. Even the internet listens to "go slow" on Caye Caulker. I believe it's faster in the morning because it's not being used as much. Slower speed in the bars works to their advantage, the slower the net, the more you drink.

I use my unlocked iphone when not using my laptop or ipad and use a phone card that I buy from BTL, the phone company on the island. You use up your minutes faster when you go online but at least I don't have to run around the island looking for wifi all the time if it's just to check emails or watch the weather pattern websites.

You can also buy the internet stick from BTL as well, I haven't tried it myself yet but there have been recent posts on here about that and apparently that way you can use your laptop and buy minutes in the same way apparently.

I work from Caye Caulker a month at a time and when I am doing heavy internet work I use the internet at Cayeboard Connection as does my son when he wants to go onto YouTube or Skype. It's fast enough for that kind of thing. You can bring your laptop in there and they'll find a spot for you to work. The rest of the time I use Paradiso mostly and enjoy a glass of wine.
