Should I bring a bicycle from the states or buy one in San Pedro? I plan on that being my main source of transport during my year stay. Do I have to pay taxes on one if i bring it? I looked at bicycles there and they seem so "new and shiny" and I am worried about them being a target of theft. Maybe I should just bring an old beater? any ideas?

McJenn I bought my bike there for a two month stay and was glad I did..I priced the bikes there on a previous trip and I wanted my 18 speed mountain bike anyway..I paid duty of 20 US as I was leaving it there after my stay..I packed it carefully with the front tire and seat off but all packed in the same box..I made my box out of a bigger box..like custom fitted and all taped up..It survived the trip fine and I was very glad i had my own bike..I took a locking cable to lock it when needed and never had a problem..I was told to lock it tho as I know of many that were stolen..Hope this helps..Peace..

We have found the less complicated the gear as a 10speed the better. They seems to hold up better and less hassle to repair.

Hi McJennifer: I shipped over two bicycles and have bought one in San Pedro. The two most important issues regarding bicycles on San Pedro are 1. the wheels and body are made of aluminum (steel rusts) and 2. a nice color. A good 1 speed Korean bicycle called Hurricane(s), are good and dependable if you get the variety with Stainless steel wheels. They cost about $150 US and look good in either blue or red. Don't know any reason to have a mountain bike, as we have no mountains.
