Dear Neighbors -

As you know there have been some tragic boat accidents involving swimmers who ventured unknowingly into boating lanes.

The BTB has manufactured some safety notice signs - they are to be placed on piers.

The first 50 signs are in hand - 25 will be put on the longest/most popular swimmable piers north of the bridge - for now the list of piers is as follows:

Ak Bol
Palapa Bar
Grand Caribe
El Pescador
Captain Morgans
Belizean Cove Estates
Coco Beach
Belizean Shores
Seascape
Las Terazzas
Solaria/Rendezvous
Journey's End
Indigo
Los Encantos
Campbell's dock
Sundiver
McAffee's
Rojo Lounge
Azul Villas
Mata Chica
La Perla
Portofino
Canary Cove
Costa Maya

The BTB/Port Authority team will do the installations. If your pier is on the list above, please be around on the 13th so when the installation team arrives, you can tell them where the signs should go.
The 13th is MONDAY ........

See the notice below from Kevin Gonzalez, Destination Director, BTB.

I'd also like to note for the record, that the Coastal Express is no longer taking the interior passage from Journey's End to Sundiver ...... this is a great move towards improved safety. Thank you Coastal.

Cheers
MINS

Great news! I will pass this on to Rob & Dana. Can you post a copy of the sign?

Sorry I don't have a copy of the sign to post. The list above is just half of the piers that will get signs next week. Josh has put together a list of piers to the south of town for another 25 signs.
Hopefully they aren't too scary ...... and hopefully we'll avert another accident.
I think it is excellent that the BTB is paying for them and installing them.
We've sent the notice to the Middle Island Neighbors mail-list and have asked the NACNW to post to their mail-list as well.
Hopefully that will cover all the folks who need notices north of the bridge, but feel free to share and help spread the word.
I think that Josh will be dealing with notifications of folks south.

A step forward but would have liked the onus to be on the boat Captains to be further out rather than inconvenience our lifeblood the Tourist who come for the water and are forced further in. Easy option picked over the better but harder one imo

Another step forward would be boat captains not driving like assholes... Lord help the next person who speeds by me/swamps my boat when I'm driving in the river...

Phil ---- you are 100% right that the boats going up and down belong farther out from the end of the piers. I have noticed that the Coastal Express is no longer taking the inside (mere feet from the end of some docks) passage from Journey's End to Sundiver. This puts them way out from swimmers - makes things one heck of a lot safer, and alot quieter too. Perhaps with enough pressure others will follow suit?
Coastal still hot-dogs into piers though. In fact most folks do - private, public carriers ... clearly it is a tough habit to break.
