A new health centre was inaugurated this afternoon in Libertad Village. The new centre will serve the villages of Libertad, Concepcion, Caledonia and San Joaquin with health care, including general medicine, pre-natal and post-natal and child health care services, breast and cervical cancer screening, outpatient services and emergency services, among others. The upper floor of the center will be used as the Doctor's quarters and is equipped with living and dining rooms, a kitchen, two bed rooms and a bathroom. The bottom floor will be used to provide medical services to the communities. The project was implemented by the Social Investment Fund at a total cost of $406,000 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. It was financed by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) under its Basic Needs Trust Fund.

6,000 benefit from new Libertad Village Health Centre

On Friday, February 24, a new health center was inaugurated in Libertad Village. The Libertad Health Center will provide better health services and benefit almost 6,000 residents in four villages of the Corozal District. Hon. Gabriel Martinez was a guest speaker at the opening ceremony. He said that the new centre will serve the villages of Libertad, Concepcion, Caledonia and San Joaquin with quality health care, including general medicine, breast and cervical cancer screening, outpatient services, pre-natal, post-natal, child care and emergency services among many others.

The health center is a two-storey 32 by 53 ft structure with a total floor area of 1,696 sq. ft. on the ground and 1,440 sq. ft. on the first floor. The upper floor will be used as the doctor's quarters and is equipped with living room, dining room, kitchen, two bed rooms and a bathroom. The bottom floor will be used to provide medical services. The clinic is equipped with male and female bathrooms, pharmacy/dispensary, asthma bay area, sterilizing room, utility room, waiting area, kitchenette, outdoor shower for patients family and treatment, examination and consultation rooms. The ferro-concrete building was constructed with a reinforced concrete foundation frame, floor and roof. As part of the project, a chain link fence was constructed around the perimeter of the health centre.An access road and parking space was also included. The community of Libertad contributed the landscaping for the facility.

Hon. Pablo Marin, Minister of Health, said that the Libertad Health Center is just one of many new health centers that have been and will be opened shortly. It is part of the Basic Needs Trust Fund 6 of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). The program seeks to reduce poverty through socio-economic initiatives and community empowerment. It is financed by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and ten beneficiary governments, including Belize. The Libertad Health Center project was implemented by the Social Investment Fund in collaboration with the Ministry of Health at a total cost of $406,000.
