Police have been holding it down - but Placencia has witnessed a few too many unreported robberies for residents and business owners.

But this one is being reported: On Saturday night at around 10, Mango's Restaurant and Bar, which is located in the Maya Beach Area of Placencia, was robbed.

Today, 7News spoke to the establishment's owner, Frank Da Silva, a 56 year-old Canadian businessman, who had just been released from the hospital for a gunshot injury he received during the robbery.

He asked to speak to us off camera, but he told us that 2 dark complexioned men entered the business place and ordered 4 four beverages.

When he handed them over the men opened two of them, giving him the impression that they were legitimate customers. A few minutes later, one of the men used one of the drinks to club one of his customers in the back of his head, which cued the other to pull out a firearm.

The man armed with the firearm started threatening one of his other guests in an attempt to convince Da Silva to hand over the establishment's earnings.

He said that when he was in the process of complying, the men attempted to rob another of his guests of their personal belongings, and that's when he reached for his concealed, licensed firearm.

Da Silva only managed to point it at the assailant, who then shot him immediately as he saw the firearm. He suffered a wound to the right side of his abdomen, and this commotion allowed the men to escape with approximately a little more than $1000.

Da Silva told us that he opened the establishment about a year and 4 months ago, and in that time, his establishment has been burglarized 2 times before this last robbery. Now, with this latest terrifying event, he has chosen to shut down the establishment, because quote, "a life is not worth it."

Robbery and Shooting in Placencia

A robbery at Mango's Restaurant and Bar in the Maya Beach area of Placencia took a violent turn when the culprit opened fire on the owner. Businessman, fifty-six year old Frank Da Silva, reported to police that shortly before ten o'clock on Saturday night, he was at Mango's along with two customers when men entered. One of the robbers was armed with a handgun and demanded the money from cash register. Da Silva complied and handed over one thousand dollars in cash. Before they escaped, the gunman fired several shots at Da Silva; one hit him on the lower abdomen. The businessman drew his own weapon and returned fired, but missed. He spent the weekend hospitalized and discharged himself this morning. Da Silva told News Five this was the third time his business has been robbed.

And there was another armed holdup in the south on Saturday night. Just over an hour before Mango's was targeted, Life Style Store in Independence Village was also robbed by two men. Storeowner, twenty-three year old Yogyata Mohnani says that at ten minutes after o’clock, she was along with her brother-in-law Hitesh Mohnani, when two men entered the store. One of them pointed a firearm at Yogyata, saying "this is a hold up". The men then stole several cell phones and assorted electronics, valued at four thousand, four hundred dollars as well as three thousand dollars in cash and then escaped. Shortly after the incident, Carl Reneau, a resident of Iguana Street in Belize City, was detained. Police are looking for the second suspect and investigations continue into both robberies.
