Eric Donis is a proud 17-year-old Sanpedrano who has set a challenge for his birthday - to swim from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye to Belize City with the goal to promote Healthy Reefs and Healthy People.

Eric Donis is a young Belizean swimmer and triathlete who aspires to represent Belize one day at international triathlon events around the world including the Olympics and maybe one day in the famous Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

Donis came up with an idea to swim from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye to Belize City in just three days. His purpose is to raise awareness of the delicate nature of our Barrier Reef at a time when there was much talk about the dangers of offshore drilling for oil.

The purpose of this swim is to demonstrate to the world how important it is to have a healthy balance between a healthy reef system and a healthy people. San Pedro High School Student, Eric Donis came up with this brilliant idea and set the date March 23, 2012; which marks his birthday.

We want people to open their eyes and to realize just how much our Great Barrier Reef means to us. Think about it. Belize is the only country in the world that has it's entire coastline hugged so tightly by a natural wall in the sea. This wall protects us from hurricanes and provides a sanctuary and an incredible breeding ground for a wide variety of marine life. Our Barrier Reef is like the rainforest of the sea. Without it Belize would not be what it is today. Let us continue to cherish it for many years to come.

Swim Challenge Postponed to Reef Week Activities

The

Committee of Healthy Reef, Healthy People Swim Challenge would like to inform the public that the swim challenge, scheduled to commence today, March 23, 2012, was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Gerry Badillo and Eric Donis informed Ambergris Today that this decision will give many people the chance to help, assist and the opportunity to join them on the challenge on the official day. They also stated that a meeting was held with the Hol Chan Marine Reserve committee and the brilliant idea arose for the Swim Challenge to be proudly added to their calendar of events for Reef Week (Reef Week dates will be announced later in April).
