The Garifuna Collective travelled for the first time as a group to Costa Rica today. The band which once backed Andy Palacio will be performing in the International Festival of Arts in Costa Rica. This is their first time travelling for this year, and we managed to catch up with them before they left. Ivan Duran, director of Stone Tree records told us more about what the band will be doing in Costa Rica.

Ivan Duran, Director of Stone Tree Records
"We are doing 2 performances, 2 concerts and the second concert is part of a showcase; part of a Central American music market, which for the first time, have been created in Costa Rica. Groups from all the Central American countries come and perform. I'm part of the organizing committee and we have invited promoters and agents from Europe and North America to come in and see the bands and hopefully get them booked for festivals in their countries later on in the year."

"This is the first concert outside of Belize this year. The band is still very active, we are recording a new album and hopefully we will be doing a lot more tours in the near future."

Robin Schaffer
"How does it feel to be going to Costa Rica for the first time as a group?"

Joshua Arana, Member of Garifuna Collective
"It feels good. We always wanted to be a part of our Central American countries. We always wanted to perform here close to home. We've never had the opportunity before but now that ice has been broken and hopefully we can penetrate more."

Robin Schaffer
"What are some of the songs that people can expect at the festival?"

Joshua Arana, Member of Garifuna Collective
"Some of the songs that they can expect is a song by yours truly Desiree Diego. We also have "Isla" which is going to be performed by Marcela Torres. Andy Palacio's songs are going to be performed by Lloyd Agustine which includes "Miami", "Watina", "Weyu Lrigi Weyu" and "Lidan Aban.""

The Collective Returns, Recharged

On Monday we told you about the Garifuna Collective - hitting the stage in Costa Rica - at the International Festival of Arts. It was their first time travelling as a group and performing in a Latin Country, and as always, they put on a spectacular performance in front of 20 thousand people. Today the group arrived back home and 7news was at the PGIA to greet them and to find out just how the festival went.

Joshua Arana
"We were in the capital of Costa Rica. We played for one of the largest festivals in our region and it was fortunate that for the first time we had the opportunity to perform in Latin America."

Monica Bodden
"How was the experience over that side?"

Joshua Arana
"It was really wonderful. It was great that we had the opportunity not just to feature one major artist, but 4. We had Lloyd Agustine, we had Mohobub Flores, we had Desiree Diego and Marcela "Chela" Torres. These guys are well known throughout Belize and have been doing their thing and will continue doing their thing."

"If I am allowed to estimate I would think that maybe we had at least 15,000 - 20,000 people listening to us for the first show and for our second show we had about 2,000 - 3,000 people because it was a smaller venue."

According to Arana, based on their performances in Costa Rica, they now have dates booked to perform in Canada, Poland, Spain and Germany next year.

Garifuna Collective back from Costa Rica gig

JOSHUA ARANA

Just back today from a four-day tour in Costa Rica are Mohobub Flores and the Garifuna Collective. The musicians were invited to take part in that country's Festival Internacional de los Artistas. And aside from the event being a wonderful experience by their account, Joshua Arana, who headed the group, told Love News that they gained quite a lot for Belize.

One of the female artists, Marcela Aranda, said that they are already working on new material for the 2013 bookings that they have secured for Canada and Europe.

This was the first time that the Garifuna Collective has been invited to take part in throughout Latin America.
