I am going to be taking a belize vacation may 2013. I am wondering what would be the best place to stay for a group that is very interested in the maya and jungle aspect of the country and also getting to meet and hang out with some real local people. Any suggestions would be great. Price range is very flexible. Although I would much rather spend my money on a genuine belize experiance as opposed to the super plush resorts thank you!

If you are looking for the Jungle aspect, the cayes are probably not going to be your best choice. You can take excursions to the ruins etc. from your dock but I suggest staying on the mainland. Try San Ignacio or other western location as your jumping off point. There are many jungle/ruin/ecco type tours available to you and San Ignacio has some nice resorts.

You can split between beach and mainland jungle or base on the beach in a coastal village called Hopkins or the Placencia peninsula for a combo of both in one location.

San Ignacio has best options for going to Tikal, and the best tour in Belize is the ATM tour, it is awesome. Its the newest cave site discovered in 1987, still has many humane remains and artifacts. It is a ristricted tour to certain tour companys but it is the best. Cave tubing and other tours are less expensive and fun but they dont have the impact this tour has.

Cahal Pech gets my vote for a fantastic Maya Ruin experience.
It's easy to get to, the museum is wonderful and the site is impressive.
