Well, we just got back from 10 days! It was a very nice trip, although I don't know if I would actually drop everything and move down there. I'm no Pirate, so won't give you the blow-by-blow, but here are some of my thoughts. Remember, these are just my opinions.....

Favorite restaurants - Mangoes, by far!! Libby & James run a great place. Also really liked Cafe Ole across from the airport, unfortunately we didn't discover it until late in the trip. Also Jerry's Crab Shack for the pizza - the garlic shrimp pizza is amazing (I know, it sounds a bit dubious, but it's GREAT.)

Most overrated restuarant - Fido's. Crappy service, both times (see, we gave it a second chance), high prices, not that great food. HOWEVER, Elizabeth's jewelry store is not to be missed - absolutely loved her work and bought gifts as well as stuff for me.

Favorite guide - Luis the Mayan Shaman who did the jungle walk/cave tubing. Can't remember the group he's with, think it's something like Melamish or something like that. Very knowledgeable and a fun little guy.

Favorite dive master - Chris of Hustler. Good guy, and very patient!

Favorite dive spot - Half Moon Caye wall. Long trip to get out there, but so worth it. We also stopped at a place on the way back to snorkel with the rays and sharks, south end of Caye Caulker, I think, and it beat Shark Ray Alley! (Although I also enjoyed SRA.)

Favorite learning experience - learning about the Mayan culture, which I didn't know a lot about before. Talking to real people about things going on in the country. Very educational!

Things I should have taken more of: waterproof cameras. Shoes and shirts that could get trashed. Stronger bugspray.

Things I should have taken less of: clothes. Makeup.

I think we saw the end of Turnbun's wedding reception, if it was at Fido's on Sunday. If so, she made a beautiful bride, and everyone looked v. happy and like they were having a good time.

We dropped in at Saga and talked to Bron - what a good person she is, and it's a nice little operation; I'll definitely be sending them stuff (and $$) in the future.

Definitely a good idea going through Kent at Blue Hole Dive Center - he brokered everything so we didn't have to run around trying to find out who to see for what dive day, tour, etc; and he was very flexible and easy to deal throughout the whole pre-planning and time we were there.

A lady at our hotel got bent the last day we were there, that was rather sobering. Not sure exactly what happened so won't speculate.

A note to Mossback - talked to someone who saw the police report on the Delgado situation - you had many of the details right. Divemasters noticeably cautious and strict as a result of that situation, not that I minded - better safe than sorry.

Overall, definitely a good dive trip!

Little Fish....

Thanks for the report. I posted one a few days ago based on our recent trip. I like your "things I should have taken more/less of"..... comments. It's interesting that you needed stronger bug spray. We brought two containers of DEET and never used it... That was THE biggest surprise of the trip... No bugs. That is all we heard about prior... bugs.. bugs.. bugs... Nary a one. I have heard that when the wind dies down though... watch out! We were lucky. The wind blew 24/7.

Hey little fish!

I had to smile when I saw your retaurant rating. I too found Mango's and Cafe Ole to be two fo my favorite casual places to eat. Mango's is the best for late afternoon drinks and an eclectic menu that's so tasty!(Creole/Belizean/American type fusion.- very well put together menu. Is their website up yet?).
I too thought Fido's was overrated as far as food goes but still worth the visit.

Thanks for including your favorite learning experience. Nice condensed report!

bbnx - we got eaten alive! The locals said because it was either going to rain or had just rained a couple of days that the skeeters were very active. You could have played connect-the-dots on us at one point! I liked your trip report, it helped me formulate some of my own thoughts to see your ratings.

ACBB - you may be interested to know that Libby & James have a petition going to keep their liquor license; because they are so close to the school they can only have a license when school is not in session, and they started back Monday. Libby says if they don't get it approved, they are going to move, but they will definitely stay in business. She is also trying to get hold of some of the river lobsters (? sound like smaller than Carib. lobsters but bigger than crawdads) so she can try out a good old fashioned crawfish boil on the clientele. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. No word on the website yet though.

I had the pleasure of meeting Libby and her Dad while I was in AC- good ole Louisiana folks. I thought their fusion of food was creative! I hope things work out for them. If they have to move, will people go to their new place and write neat stuff on their walls?
