Well, we just got back from 10 days! It was a very nice trip, although I don't know if I would actually drop everything and move down there. I'm no Pirate, so won't give you the blow-by-blow, but here are some of my thoughts. Remember, these are just my opinions.....
Favorite restaurants - Mangoes, by far!! Libby & James run a great place. Also really liked Cafe Ole across from the airport, unfortunately we didn't discover it until late in the trip. Also Jerry's Crab Shack for the pizza - the garlic shrimp pizza is amazing (I know, it sounds a bit dubious, but it's GREAT.)
Most overrated restuarant - Fido's. Crappy service, both times (see, we gave it a second chance), high prices, not that great food. HOWEVER, Elizabeth's jewelry store is not to be missed - absolutely loved her work and bought gifts as well as stuff for me.
Favorite guide - Luis the Mayan Shaman who did the jungle walk/cave tubing. Can't remember the group he's with, think it's something like Melamish or something like that. Very knowledgeable and a fun little guy.
Favorite dive master - Chris of Hustler. Good guy, and very patient!
Favorite dive spot - Half Moon Caye wall. Long trip to get out there, but so worth it. We also stopped at a place on the way back to snorkel with the rays and sharks, south end of Caye Caulker, I think, and it beat Shark Ray Alley! (Although I also enjoyed SRA.)
Favorite learning experience - learning about the Mayan culture, which I didn't know a lot about before. Talking to real people about things going on in the country. Very educational!
Things I should have taken more of: waterproof cameras. Shoes and shirts that could get trashed. Stronger bugspray.
Things I should have taken less of: clothes. Makeup.
I think we saw the end of Turnbun's wedding reception, if it was at Fido's on Sunday. If so, she made a beautiful bride, and everyone looked v. happy and like they were having a good time.
We dropped in at Saga and talked to Bron - what a good person she is, and it's a nice little operation; I'll definitely be sending them stuff (and $$) in the future.
Definitely a good idea going through Kent at Blue Hole Dive Center - he brokered everything so we didn't have to run around trying to find out who to see for what dive day, tour, etc; and he was very flexible and easy to deal throughout the whole pre-planning and time we were there.
A lady at our hotel got bent the last day we were there, that was rather sobering. Not sure exactly what happened so won't speculate.
A note to Mossback - talked to someone who saw the police report on the Delgado situation - you had many of the details right. Divemasters noticeably cautious and strict as a result of that situation, not that I minded - better safe than sorry.
Overall, definitely a good dive trip!
