Hi!

Wanted to go to Cayo district to see the water falls, and maybe some ruins for two days.
Do you have any recommendations for an hotel? Things to do?
I live in San Pedro it's just to see something different and probably going back soon just want to do the best!

Thanks!

The best tour, including any of the Mayan ruins with perhaps the exception of Tikal that I have been on in the 11 years I have been here is the A.T.M. cave tour. Actun Tunichil Muknal. It was only discovered in the late 1980's. Still has human Mayan remains and the story of what happened in those caves and how the sacrifices came to be is incredible. Lots of artifacts unlike other tours. Also the walk through the jungle usually will have troups of howler monkeys and the drive to the caves is also interesting through Menninite farms, its just a great day.
Keep in mind its dry season and the waterfalls may be down.

We stayed at the Casa Blanca on Burns Ave. It's not fancy but is very clean, reasonably priced, and right in the heart of everything. From there, we did several interesting things:
1. Walked to the Cahal Pech ruins, where we did lots of bird-watching as well as enjoying the ruins.
2. Took a taxi to El Pilar ruins, where did more bird-watching, a lot of hiking, and had the place to ourselves.
3. Took the ATM cave tour with River Rat Expeditions. Mind-boggling-ly good.
4. Took the chicken bus to Benque just to walk around and see the town.
Had a great time. It's all documented on our blog -- see the March archive. Link in my sig.

Have fun!
