I am probably barking up a very wrong tree here, but I have a guest coming who is asking me if there is anyplace in Belize that sells Kosher chickens. He is thinking of bringing his own, but has asked me to find out. He will be in Flores for a few days, then Cayo then San Pedro. He is bringing his own cookware and utensils for using for cooking his food while here.

I thought MAYBE I would try Greenhouse here in SP, but thought I would ask.

Google tells me that it has to do with a ritual killing of the chicken. Perhaps your guest could do his own ceremony?

Not only the killing but the processing of the meat. It should be sanctioned by a Rabbi to be Kosher.

Just sent an email of the post to a Rabbi friend of mine who spends a month in Belize every year. Will see if he can help with any info.

Thanks BW... this is sounding more and more like they will be eating fish with scales and fins (no shellfish or swordfish) for every meal!

Info from my Rabbi friend:

Options:

1. He should freeze the boxed empire chickens solid and bring them in with him.
2. Or eat fish that are kosher and skip the chicken while he is there.
3. If he wants to kill his own chicken he has to hang them upside down so the blood will run out fast supporting the weight
Say the blessing thanking God and the chicken for providing for him and kill the chicken with
a knife so sharp it can cut a piece of paper that falls upon it.
The cut is on the neck so to spare the chicken suffering. The cut causes death instantaneously.
Jews don't eat animals that suffer, one quick cut with absolutetlyy no strangling or holding its head and spinning it around
like the mexicans do to break its neck.
4. Hold the chicken's weight while it is upside down before hitting the neck in a quick slice.

Sounds awfully complicated -- why not just go vegetarian while he's here. There are plenty of beans around!

I have had the same issue and there is a list of which fish are kosher and not. Snapper is and Bara is not. There is a hallal meat shop in Belize City, but am not sure the Muslim and Jewish religous reqirements are exactly the same, even though it comes from the same book. There are products in the shops that are Kosher, and will have a U stamped on them with Parve or Preve and those are kosher. I know we have kosher salt in the markets here too. Buy (recycled) plates and utentils
