On the heels of that damning report of Belize City being on the top most hated cities, is another international article about organized criminal activity in our backyard. La Prensa Grafica, a newspaper in El Salvador has reported that ruthless Salvadoran gangs are moving into Belize. The article says that over the past decade, the country's two largest gangs, the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and the Barrio Eighteen have both increased their presence in the capital city, Belmopan. According Prensa Grafica, in the wider Cayo District, an unnamed Salvadoran gang with around four hundred members also operates with impunity. The newspaper suggests that the use of the Commercial Free Zone in Corozal for contraband smuggling may also have contributed to the increased gang activity in Belize. Smugglers take advantage of the cheap prices to make a profit and it could open the door for more serious organized criminal activity. The report cites the truce between thirteen local gangs, which resulted in a decrease in violent crimes last year, but is now fracturing. It also notes that Belize's murder rate has since climbed to about forty per hundred thousand people, surpassing Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Rebecca Stirm on the Mission Catwalk

Rebecca Stirm is back in the Mission Catwalk Season Two Finale. In a dramatic double elimination last week Tuesday, Stirm was one of the contestants who failed to impress the judges with a mini collection for a fashionista headed to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. However, Stirm, who has won the most challenges on the show, was asked to design a separate collection for the Caribbean Fashion Week and to enter independently. And in a surprising twist of events, Stirm was returned to the series as a 'wild card.' Here's Rebecca's immediate reaction about her experience.

Voice of: Rebecca Stirm

"When the judges announced to me that I was being brought back as a wild card I was very, very excited and I teared up and it was very humbling to know that someone's willing to give you a second chance and to know that I have a second shot at winning and going to London Fashion Week is very exciting for me. The entire C.F.W. experience for me was very exciting from the creation, to the collection, to filling the models, to seeing the looks out on the runway and getting to walk out on the runway with my finale pieceIt is just a very, very rewarding experience to know the amount of work you put in is paying off; and I wanna say a huge thank you to Belize Bank and B.T.L. They were my main sponsors for CFW and also all my other sponsors that chipped in that was such an amazing help and please continue to watch Mission Catwalk. It's the final two episodes. You don't want to miss them so tune in Tuesday night to watch the episode live streaming on at seven-thirty. Thanks again guys for all your support"

Tonight's episode of Mission Catwalk which normally shows at eight o’clock on Channel Five will not be broadcast until Wednesday night.
