Hi Everyone. We are planning a family trip to Belize. Me, my wife, and two kids 15 and 10, along with my Mother and father inlaw. I am just so undecided what to do on this trip. Don't know whether to come down at the end of July here for 7 nights, or the end of May next year for 10-14 days. Can you truely spend that many days there and never be bored? Remember I have two kids. I really not sure where to stay, as we like doing everything. I know the fishing is great. We always enjoyed all inclusive places but not sure how that goes there. I've researched so many places on all the islands and just can't seem to pull the trigger on a certain place as i want this to be perfect. Can you please guide me in some direction. The area just looks beautiful, and looking forward to spending the time there. Any help would greatly appreciated. Also I know they say the beaches for the most part aren't the best for swimming, but could you tell me where we could find the best ones? Will we have to go out to one of the islands for that also? mjs

Hi dhgeM,
If you're planning to spend 10-14 days in Belize, why not consider spending some time on the mainland too. There are a ton of fun and exciting things for families to do in San Pedro, but the mainland also has some adventures that kids just adore.
On San Pedro, we have fishing, snorkeling, diving, sailing, windsurfing, kite boarding, hiking, two national parks, one of which is an archaeological site, miles of beaches to roam and so many fun community events. On the mainland, you can visit Maya ruins, explore the jungle, go cave tubing, ziplining and horseback riding. Mixing a trip to Ambergris Caye with a trip to the mainland was certainly my favourite way to enjoy Belize when I was a tourist.

If you have that many people you may want to come out to Caye Caulker, overall everything here is about 30 to 40% less expensive than San Pedro. We have a great swimming and snorkel spot at the split. Caye Caulker is much smaller than San Pedro, if you are into fine dining and more upscale resorts that would be San Pedro. Scuba, snorkel, fishing are at par just less expensive here. You can do some online search stuff on both places. I would spend 4 days on Caye Caulker or San Pedro, then head up to San Ignacio for 4 days, stop at the Belize Zoo, as The Director of a Humane Society here I dont much like Zoos, but this one is great, your kids will see animals they didnt know existed. The bus ride fron Belize City to San Ignacio is about 4 hours, you can jump off the bus go to the zoo and catch the next bus up for about $6.00 each. There are alot of family friendly places to stay in San Ignacio, from $20 to $30. Then take the family to the A.T.M. caves, its the best adventure I think Belize has to offer...google..A.T.M.Belize to read more. Then you can also go to xunantunich mayan ruins about 20 minutes out of San Ignacio....Do your internet searches and good luck..

Look into Hopkins Village for a few nights too. The beaches are great for swimming, and there are resorts with kayaks and beach bikes, along with restaurants. We stayed at a smaller place than might work for your family ( Beaches & Dreams), but we walked up the beach a bit and ate dinner at Belizean Dreams ( Belizean Dreams Resort) that might be a good place for a larger crew. There are other resorts in Hopkins that might work for your family (check tripadvisor for reviews) too. You can take several different tours from this area as it's pretty centrally located. There's zip-lining at Mayflower Bocawina National Park, river tubing at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, hiking, and river tours on the Sittee River. San Pedro is great for diving, fishing, dining, and beach biking. San Ignacio is nicely located for tours to Maya ruins. And let's not forget Placencia (or nearby Maya Beach), which also has beautiful swimming beaches. Yes, you can definitely spend 1-2 weeks exploring Belize -- easily! You can spend a month or more if you have the time and money!

I haven't been either, but I think it looks fun -- I guess there's a big adrenaline rush from "zipping". I am over 50 but am fit and would definitely try it. I haven't heard of anyone who was injured on a "professional" (i.e., not homemade) zipline.

It's super fun. Exciting. Expensive definitely. The expense is the only thing that's kept me from doing it so far. But I do plan to splurge one of these days before I'm too old to enjoy the rush.

What does it cost to zip line in Belize?
I just ziplined for my first time in Nicaragua (above San Juan del Sur) recently and thought it was awesome...and I am afraid of heights! Did 17 platforms for $30.00. We saw howler monkeys in the trees, swinging and howling away, lots of neat birds. The price included being picked up and dropped off at the front of our hotel. For a "3 hour tour", I thought it was a lot of fun!
