OK, so Ambergris Daily tends to the controversial but..

I doubt many of them were actually incarcerated in Hattieville. More likely they were just shipped off to Belize City and perhaps Corozal. But if true, the crime problem in SP that didn't exist is now over and the tourists, visitors, and locals can all rest easy.

Citizens are guaranteed free right to travel about the country as they see fit under the constitution. Preventive detention is constitutionally banned. Anyone detained is to be charged within 48hrs or released.

My underlying point exactly, Mike. Boats run in both directions and the thieves will quickly run out of tourists in Belize City and Corozal or wherever they went...

But neighborhood watch groups who are privy to who these folks are can make it REALLY hard to hang around and make much leeway in their crime. Just knowing who they are and that they have returned will go a long way toward helping residents protect themselves. Tourists-- you're kind of on your own.

I suppose I should ask- what are the rules on compiling mugshots from public records of arrest and distributing them around town?

You could probably get away with that for convicted criminals but not for those merely arrested. Security camera pictures however could be distributed if it shows a crime in progress and the underlying text is something like "Do you know this man?" I think anything else would open the door to slander/libel.

Does anyone know what the neighborhood watch people do in this regard? Do they use photos of the convicted and/or cameras as mentioned above to monitor communities?
