I've never dived. Do I need some kind of licensing before I get to AC or can I take lessons there?

Look in the phone book under diving for a local scuba shop that provides instuction.I would ask them about the open water referral program. This is where you take the clasrom and pool portions of you training at home and then complete your certification in Belize by doing four open water dives with an Instructor. The cost for the open water dives is approx US $225. Ask your local dive shop what they charge for the classroom and pool portion. I did mine in one weekend! Another option is to take a resort course in belize, you can dive after a little work with an instructor, but you will not be certified. Try this link www.barefootwatersports.net They can give you all the info you need. Good luck!!

do the pool/book work at home, then finish the job insan pedro with a referral as described above.

pretty much all the dive shops listed at: //AmbergrisCaye.com/diving/

offer those classes...

thats what our whole family has done. we take the class right before we go down, then when the rest of the class does their open water dives in 40 degree water with 4 foot visibility, we head to Belize!

This is excellent advice. I took my first dives in San Pedro and had some worrying experiences. It's probably best to get yourself some good instruction before you go.
