Letter to the Editor: The word on the street is that government is paying gang members
The word on the street is that government is paying gang members. This is a problem within our nation. It is said that the government is paying them to “keep the peace”. Why is the government paying these people? Are they hiding something? Could it be that the gangs know something about our government representatives and are being paid to keep quiet? How much are they being paid? This raises many questions, some that cause us to doubt our government’s ability to run our country properly. This is happening while educated individuals are finding it harder than ever to survive. Why is it that the government of Belize is paying known gang members while an educated individual who has an associate’s degree is still unemployed and is left to find their own way? We all know that life is not fair and things never go smoothly. But when the government is blatantly taking care of suspected criminals and leaving us educated individuals to fend for ourselves after completing our studies and still not able to get a job after almost a year of searching, this is a serious problem. If the government is able to pay gang members, should they not also implement a payment for educated individuals who cannot get a job after a year of looking?

General Weather/Ernesto
Beautiful full moon last night. Super weather today. See early morning photo below - photo credit goes to Elbert Greer of White Sands Dive Shop. We're watching Ernesto of course. Successive predictions have moved the storm track somewhat south, and seeing 4 of 6 computer models having an arrival in Belize does make one sit up and take notice. The good news - and it is very good indeed - is that strength is predicted to be in the low end of a Category One. That kind of storm doesn't phase most islanders any a'tall. We're blessed with a remarkable Barrier Reef that blocks waves & major surge, and with a sufficiently flat terrain that there is no fear of landslides or significant flooding.

Coca Cola Art Exhibit in Benque
The Coca Cola art exhibit is also at the Benque HoC. They also did their opening ceremony last night.

Coca Cola Art Exhibit Opening
The SISE House of Culture had the opening of the Coca Cola art exhibit last night. There are some amazing pictures there. They had a really quick introduction, followed by the exhibit, and then they served Coca Cola and some delicious panades. The Benque HoC also had their opening of the exhibit. Both exhibits run unitl August the 20th.

Chess Camp's Last Day at Hode's
The Belize National Youth Chess Foundation has finished their chess camp, which was held at Hode's. They had great turnouts, and even played a little jenga for something different. "We were pleased to have, as guests, Steve Flowers, Erwin Wiils and Akeem Jenkins"

Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic Video
The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic has a great new video out which shows and explains a little bit about what they do. They also interview the first two interns, so you get to see it through their eyes. The video shows them working on some wildlife, like parrots and iguanas, and some domestic animals. It also highlights the work they do with the Green Iguana Conservation Project. Awesome video, shot by Daniel Velazquez. Like their new FB page:

Eco Kids Summer Camp pictures
Great pictures of the Eco Kids Summer camp, taken by JCariddi Photography. He captured some magical moments, and there are some awesome black and white pictures too. The kids had the times of their lives, and it shows. Thanks go out to Chaa Creek for making such a difference in the community.

Belize in the 2012 London Olympics So Far...VERY Impressive But Is It Over?
elize first participated in the Olympic games in 1968 (as British Honduras) and has sent a team to the games ever since. (Except for 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics when they boycotted along with the USA and other countries). Belize has never won a medal...yet. For the 2012 Olympics in London, Belize is represented by a team of three athletes. Eddermys Sanchez (born in Cuba and now living in Belize City) who competed in Judo, Kaina Martinez (born in Stann Creek, Belize) competing in the 100m sprint and 24 year old Kenneth Medwood (born in LA, California, family from Maskall, Belize) in the 400m hurdles. We all saw them during the opening ceremony. Popular blogs like Divine Caroline and Nick Verreos's Fashion awarded Belize's ultra-preppy outfits some top honors. Personally? I loved them. Especially the white shoes. "Grab my croquet mallets Jeeves. Off to the country club!" Our judo competitor was unfortunately eliminated on June 29th during his first round. Amazing just to compete on the biggest stage in the world. For some reason Belize is listed as BIZ. Ms. Martinez tied for 3rd out of 33 in her preliminary round yesterday. Ummmm...AWESOME. She unfortunately did not qualify to advance during her next race. Kenneth Medwood was our flag bearer during the opening ceremony and he is also the last Belizean still competing this year. Medwood qualified in his first round and will be running in the semi-finals today! 7pm London time, Noon, Belize Time, August 4th. Hopefully on his way to the finals.
