The bus terminal area is one of the busiest and most trafficked areas of Belmopan. That's due mainly to the scheduled, daily movements of buses to and from the terminal and the street that have deteriorated overtime. This morning an official ceremony was held to mark the start of a street project for the City of Belmopan under the Belize Municipal Development Project (BMDP). The project has been in the pipe line for almost two years and is part of a $30 million dollar Government initiative aimed at providing and upgrading of infrastructure in the City of Belmopan. The project will include the enhancement of the one-way street and parking area at the north and east side of the Belmopan Bus Terminal. Plus news was present at this morning's launch where Mayor Simeon Lopez gave the opening remarks.

Simeon Lopez, Mayor, Belmopan
The Belize Municipal Development Project as has been rightly said is a loan that is negotiated from the World Bank and the City of Belmopan has been on the receiving end as well as six other municipalities, as part of the infrastructure project and we have been waiting for this for a very long time. We had a concept already of what this place would look like when it's finished and it is the job of the contractors and the engineers that everything goes according to plan.

The upgrade will include the realignment of street side drains, provision of street concrete curbs, and resurfacing of the street with Hot Mix. Daniel Cano is the Executive Director of Social Investment Fund.

Work here at the Bus Terminal calls for the enhancement of the one-way street on the eastern side of and the parking area on the eastern side the Bus Terminal. This will include the realignment of street drains, provision of pick up and drop off base for private and taxi vehicles, the resurfacing of the streets and parking areas with hot mix, as well as the provision of street markings and permanent signage.

The Hon. John Saldivar, Area Representative for the City of Belmopan was also present. While the minister expressed his satisfaction with the project he did make mention that the process has been drawn out.

Hon. John Saldivar, Area Representative, City of Belmopan
We are of course extremely happy that we have been given this assistance from the World Bank; it has come in very timely for us. I look at the two municipalities though, that are not a part of this project and can only marvel at how much faster they are able to implement infrastructure projects in their municipalities. Nevertheless, we are here and we will benefit; our city will get a good facelift from what we have in this second phase and so at the end of this other term of the United Democratic Party in City Council, it is my hope that we would have been able to pave at least eighty percent of the streets in Belmopan. In referring to the slowness of the implementation of this project, it is in no way a slight to the people at the Social Investment Fund or the Ministry of Economic Development; as has been said earlier - certain stringent conditions and requirements were placed on us by our cooperating partners.

Mayor Lopez also made mention of other works what will be coming on stream in mid September.

From here, the next project will be the Nim Li Punit Street - that is a street where the Chinese groceries like Fanscico and 99 are which will also be hot-mixed, a portion of Hummingbird Drive which is in the Mountain View area and Raccoon Street. Those should begin hopefully sometime around the middle or nearly end of September, by that time this one we hope will be almost if not completed, weather permitting.

After this morning ceremony; tractors and a crew got started on the works. This project will cost approximately $278,382.00 and will be carried out by Belize Roadway Construction, a local firm. A project monitoring committee has also been commissioned to oversee the works of the BMDP project. The BMDP is financed by the Government of Belize through a loan from the World Bank.

Maybe it's hoarded cash from an old World Bank loan that GOB has been waiting to use on the next needy project cool
