The flooding never reached into the house -- but all about is flooded -- and not going down fast -- a real bitch.

They build up the level of a cane road 2 miles to the back and that caused waters to rise 3 ft more than normal to cross over that road.

Unfortunatly the locals can't see or act on that -- so we wait for some person from government to order the road back down -- or put sufficient culverts there.

I was going to hire some folks to dig it out by hand -- but was told I would be arrested -- so we wait till people become enlightened.

There is at least 500 acres of good cane crop dying due to this -- yet still nobody moves --

I've never seen the water go this high -- or stay this long. But hey -- dams make ponds.

They blocked the natural drainage.

Eventually I am sure they will figure this out -- but when is the question.

Flooding In Xaibe Affects Agricultural Sector

In last night's newscast we showed you the after effects of Tropical Depression number 7 which turned into a Tropical Wave. It caused a wide range of flooding across the Corozal District leaving streets, yards and homes under several inches of water. The mass flooding affected areas such as Chula Vista, Altamira, Potzal and Olga Marin Drive sending DEMO Corozal into an emergency meeting. But Corozal Town was not the only place affected by the flooded waters. Villages such as Libertad, Concepcion, San Joaquin and Xaibe were also affected. In Xaibe several homes were left under water, but what's even worst, is that the agricultural sector in the area received some serious damage.

Numerous roads and yards are under several feet of water in the Village of Xaibe in the Corozal District. Like residents of Corozal Town, Villagers of Xaibe did not expect the flooding and the damage that it caused. Homes are inundated by more than four feet of water but what is even worse is that the livelihood of villagers is at stake since the bad weather damaged their crops.

According to Genara Cano, the Area Leader for Humana People to People, over thirty families have been affected in the village of Xaibe.

"Hay ma�z, frijol, repollo y todo eso que ellos siembran para que ellos sobrevivan.  Ahorita de esa familias yo solo tengo treinta familias que est�n sembrando pero fue dese la primera lluvia se lavo todas las matas y esta es la segunda lluvia que llovió all� en San Roque y el camino de Patchakan."

For the past eight years, 64 year old Jose Maria Calles has been supporting his family by planting and growing a wide range of vegetables. According to Calles, it's not the first time that flooding has affected his 10 acres of corn field.

"Yo siembro de todo sandia, ma�z, frijol, tomate, chile dulce y el ano pasado repollo, este ano pues creo que no voy a meterme en repollo solo en chile dulce, tomate y cebolla. Ahorita solo se da�o el ma�z y una 500 matas de chile y como unas 300 de tomate.  El ma�z ya tenia como 30 mecates pero ya coseche parte, lo que se da�o fue como unas 10 mecates y ahorita ya perd� como unos $300.00 pero lo que pasa que se hecha a perder todo se marchita y se seca si."

Humana People to People have been assisting those in need with clothing, but without a doubt there is more that is needed.

"Pues ahorita traje cuatro bolsas y en la ma�ana le di como cuatro tambi�n.  Esto yo lo fui a pedir el la tienda de Humana, pero como yo le llame en la ma�ana a ellos y ellos me dijeron que yo vaya all� y que escoja ropa pues yo escog� y traje cien pedazos de trapo traje aqu� en esta cuatro bolsas.  Esas bolsas son de Humana y me los dieron que yo venda para los ni�os para que yo me ayude con el baile de la mestizada y pues a mi me dio lastima y le llame para decirle que yo lo voy a regalar y �l me dijo que yo lo haga y yo ya regale una parte y ahorita tengo que avisar otra familia que vengar a buscar a ver si lo necesitan en realidad."

Presently Humana People to People is looking at other organizations that can assist residents of the area.

According to Chairman of DEMO Corozal Willard Levy, a damage assessment team has been deployed to the affected areas to assess the damaged caused especially in the agricultural sector.

Xaibe Residents Want TO Know Where Is The Assistance?

Earlier in the newscast we told you about how the flooding has affected the farmers of Xaibe Village. While those farmers are grieving the loss of their crops, some residents are frustrated that no assistance is coming their way as is the case of 45 year old Maria Rodriguez who suffered the blunt of the bad storm that passed through the country on Wednesday night. Her yard has turned into a lagoon and what's even worst, the water is stagnant.

"Yo lo que le quiero decir que me saquen el agua de mi terreno, solo eso y mis cosas porque todo se me perdió, todo, todo no saque nada, solo eso y nada mas porque no les pido ninguna ayuda que solo quiero que me ayuden con el agua pues lo balance yo lo puedo conseguir a como de lugar."

Living across Rodriguez is 33 year old Rubycelly Duran and her family. Like Rodriquez, Duran's home is inundated by water and she is yet to receive assistance from the relevant authorities, despite several requests made.

"Yo he quedado nueve anos en este lado y siempre ha venido hurac�n ha venido lo que sea y nosotros ya andamos pidiendo ayuda tocando puerta en puerta pero parece que no nos quieren responder y no nos quieren dan ayuda por lo mismo como esta gente que esta ac� lado de la compa��a y nos mal contestaron y nosotros estamos pidiendo el agua por los ni�os que va a pasar con los ni�os que tenemos nosotros ayuda estamos pidiendo. Las autoridades solo nos dijeron que es parte de la naturaleza nosotros ya pedimos y ahora que podemos hacer."

According to both women they have sought assistance from their Area Representative Honorable Hugo Patt. That assistance; however is yet to come.

Xaibe Residents Demand Assistance

Tensions are running high in the village of Xaibe in the Corozal District as flooded waters are yet to recede. Tonight 5 families from the village are still affected by the stagnant water which seems to have nowhere to go. Concerned for their health, on Saturday, villagers joined hands and began digging a drain that runs along the recently paved road in order for the water flow out of the village.  But their efforts were halted when Corozal Police was called out to the area and instructed villagers to stop the digging immediately since they were damaging the road. We travelled to Xaibe this morning and spoke to residents who say that something must give or else.

Frustrated that the flood water has not receded and that assistance on behalf of the relevant authorities is hard to come by, Villagers of Xaibe in the Corozal District took actions into their own hands. Bright and early on Saturday morning, the men, women and children of the village took it upon themselves to further open the drain that runs along the newly paved road in order to assist the more than five families that are being affected by the stagnant water.

"Nosotros queremos ver que podemos hacer en esta situación porque nosotros lo estamos viviendo no ellos, ellos est�n secos, nosotros hay d�as que ni comemos pero gracias a mi vecinos que nos estiro el bocado es que por eso estamos comiendo, eso es lo que yo pido que nos hagan caso y nos saquen esa agua.

"Nos esta afectando bastante porque al principio pensamos que el agua se iba a desplazar porque tenemos bastante tiempo viviendo ac� y nunca nos hab�a pasado esto ahora que vimos no solo a mi vecina porque mi vecina de aqu� es la que mas se hund�a siempre pero poquito nunca llegaba a su casa ni con hurac�n, incluso paso el hurac�n y nada paso no nos hundimos, nadie se hundió pero apenas vinieron hacer el camino ellos hicieron esta cosas, los culvert, y aparte de que lo hicieron dejaron el montón de tierra a lado, ellos no se pusieron a pensar que deber�an de haber puesto tuber�a para sacar el agua recto hacia haya."

All indications are that the proper infrastructure was not set in place when the drainage system was built and today residents are blaming Triple B Equipment Limited, the company that was awarded the contract to build the road from Calcutta to Xaibe to Patchakan and from Xaibe to San Roque.

Berta Camal and Norma Swiss represent only but 2 of the 5 families that are still being affected by the flooding. Both women told CTV3 News that they have attempted to obtain assistance from their Area Representative Honourable Hugo Patt, but the request simply falls on deaf ears.

"El s�bado fuimos con el ministro con Hugo Patt, y �l nos dijo que no hay finanzas que queremos que nos sacaran esta agua pero dijo que no hay finanzas y que el gobierno no tiene finanzas y mi vecina les dijo que si no tienen que les mande la maquina y nosotros vamos a poner la gasolina y despu�s el mando como las cuatro y media el mando y abrieron ac� y le damos las gracias a el que mando pero no esta yendo el agua y por eso nosotros tuvimos que abrir ac� para que corra el agua y despu�s vino la polic�a y nos paro."

"Vino la polic�a y no nos quiso escuchar, dijo que nosotros ten�amos de sacar permiso y yo le dije que para sacar permiso entonces hasta Hugo Patt tuvo que haber sacado permiso para hacer esto que hizo ac�, porque nosotros no tenemos nada entonces a �l no le van a decir nada y nosotros estamos tratando de abrir el camino traen polic�a porque mi esposo hab�a llamado desde el s�bado preguntando que podemos hacer porque hasta la polic�a llamamos y ellos le dijeron a mi esposo que tienen que llamar a los de enfrente."

"Don luciano dijo pues hay que abrir este lado, vieron primero adonde se va abrir, nosotros dijimos pero nosotros estamos abriendo ac� porque mas es ac� que el agua va a perjudicar a nadie porque mucha gente salió perjudicada con que abrieron tambi�n y estamos consiente porque la gente su calle se lo estrecharon y ahora nosotros ya no podemos hacer nada, el agua no se va por haya simplemente no va."

Today makes six days that residents of the area have had to deal with the stagnant water which is already producing an unpleasant smell. Now we all know this means great health risks and with no visit as yet from the Ministry of Health residents are concerned.

"Porque hay ni�os que se est�n enfermando y ni de la salud ha venido a vernos ac�, eso es lo que estamos pidiendo."

"Ese agua esta apestando mas y mas los drenajes se han hecho que ni se notan, los pozos est�n llenos de suciedad, la gente no se imaginan donde se est�n haciendo sus necesidades ellos porque si no hay escusados a donde esa gente est�n haciendo sus necesidades, al menos gracias a Dios que nosotros tenemos surige y a nosotros no se nos lleno la taza podemos ir al ba�o pero la gente que vive all� atr�s con el gringo ellos todo sus escusados se les fue, ac� a mis vecina se les fue, ac� la se�ora igual y a mi otra vecina todo su escusado se les fue ahora nosotros decimos necesitamos una gran ayuda. Porque haya tras huele feo, apesta ya, hay suciedad, hay animales muertos, hay montón de virus ahorita que esta cosa al rato va hacer una epidemia aqu� tal ves."

As the days go by and assistance is nowhere in sight, frustration grows. According to Norma Swiss, something has got to give in or else.

"Si ellos no hacen nada no se si nos vamos a Belmop�n o simplemente nos ponemos como dicen en huelga como hace Mexico para ver si algo hace la gente porque yo creo que aqu� deber�a esto desde el principio que vieron esto que esta afectando fueran movido maquinas para sacar tan siquiera el agua, porque mire aquella se�ora perdió todo, ella no pide nada, ella esta durmiendo en el suelo con sus hijos lo pueden ir a verlo a donde esta durmiendo en una casa que le dieron, llevo una amacha que tiene pero no tiene a donde guindarlo, ella esta durmiendo en el suelo y nadie le ofrece un colchón a esa se�ora, yo ayer cocine para los que estaban trabajando porque vemos la necesidad de la gente pero a donde vamos a llegar qui�n sabe solo la bendición de Dios porque."

When we contact Area Representative Honourable Hugo Patt, he told us via phone he is doing everything possible to assist the affected families. According to him, engineers will visit the village to assess the land and better determine how to deal with stagnant. Honourable Patt; however, was unable to say how soon engineers will be deployed to the area. Patt did say; though, that the last possible resort will be to pump the water out of the village.

We attempted to contact Dean Pascasio, the Project Manager at the Ministry of Works in Belmopan, but were informed that he was on vacation. When we asked to speak with the project's engineer, Robert Allen, we were informed that he was in a meeting.
