I frequently have need for documents to be notarized by a US Notary. I understand that I can go to the US Embassy but for obvious reasons would like to find one on the island.Yes, I understand it's a longshot.Thanks.

Not sure what the requirements are to be a US Notary but surely some enterprising American on the Caye can meet them and become one. I needed one recently had to go to Belmopan and they charge US$50 per signature plus cost of travel. Thanks Uncle Sam.

Edit for answer. I didn't find one and was told one didn't exist on the Caye, about 6 months back.

Notary's are state specific so a notary in Belize wouldn't be legal.

I'm a Notary for Massachusetts and I was told the same when sworn in. Notary's are state specific and if out of that state, the Notarization is not legal. I can't cross the boarder into NY, CT, or anywhere and notarize anything.

Wow, I learned something today. I've been a notary in WI for 30 years. Went to the State website after reading this thread and learned I can only notarize in WI, not elsewhere.

Thank you for the responses. I'm a bit surprised that the embassy would charge anything but a nominal fee to a US citizen.

I don't think its the embassy thats the notary, its probably someone at the embassy that has a notary stamp. They take some type of course and pay a fee to be a notary. I also wonder since notary's are state specific how they can legally notarized anything.

It is the US gov. WHAT FEES ARE CHARGED FOR CONSULAR NOTARIAL AND AUTHENTICATION SERVICES ABROAD? Effective July 13, 2010 there is a $50.00 fee for each notarial service. Also effective July 13, 2010, there is a $50.00 fee for each authentication service provided by a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. Fees may be paid in cash or by certified check or money order. No personal checks are accepted. Certified checks or money orders should be made payable to the American embassy or consulate. (For example, American Embassy Kingston.)
