Mother and children injured but safe.
Abelino Garcia, 25, an employee of Hamanasi Resort in Hopkins, was fatally wounded when he tried to prevent a brutal machete attack against a woman, Olivia Coc, 36, and her two children last Saturday evening, October 27.
Garcia, who was heading home from work, saw Coc’s 5-year-old son running from a man wielding a machete, who at that point had already injured the boy and was chasing him to inflect more harm.
Garcia tried to intervene, but the machete man chopped him in the head and on the hand. His efforts to save the boy proved fatal for himself but it gave the child enough time to make it to the roadside, where he received help from the occupants of a passing vehicle, who stopped when they saw the boy’s condition.
Mrs. Coc, the boy’s mother, received a chop wound across her mouth, and lost four of her fingers. Her 13-year-old daughter also suffered a chop wound across her mouth and behind the neck, an injury that made it difficult for her to move her head.
They are receiving medical treatment at the Southern Regional Hospital.
Dangriga police are involved in an all-points manhunt for the attacker, described as a dark complexioned man, whom police believe, is still in the area.
Coc and her children were returning from a fishing trip when they were attacked.
Abelino Garcia, a resident of Cayo, will be buried in San Ignacio, reports say.
