This is the month for the celebration of a culture replete with colour and vivacity: The Garinagu. The morning the air was alive and electrifying as students of the various primary and high schools in Belmopan congregated around and under the white tent tops. The attraction; Garifuna drummers and dancers moving in rhythm to the symphony of the pulsating drumbeat; their voices carrying the echo of chants passed down from generation to generation. Builders Hardware compound here in Belmopan was the scene of this marvelous cultural presentation.
The tempo drew a few bytanders into the dance as the audience became more enraptured by the sights and sound. Then Paul Nabor took centre stage and entertained the audience in a matter befitting of the local king of Paranda. It was a momentous moment that succeeded in setting the stage for a series of cultural events yet to unfold as the 19th of November draws nigh. Julian Cruz reporting
Other upcoming activities particularly for the Belmopan area include live drumming at the Independence and Isidoro Parks on the 13th and 14th respectively. On Thursday there will be a couple events on Garifuna Awareness Day: Primary Garifuna Quiz Contest and Little Ms. Garifuna to be held at the Belmopan Civic Center.
