US National murdered on North Ambergris Caye; John McAfee wanted for questioning

A US National was murdered on Ambergris Caye sometime between the night of Saturday, November 10th and Sunday November 11th on northern Ambergris Caye. The police are yet to make an arrest but are looking for John McAfee, who they believe may be able to assist them in their investigation. The incident took place in the Mata Grande area some six miles north of San Pedro Town and the victim has been identified as 52-year-old Gregory Viant Faull, a retired American of state of Miami, Florida USA. Faull was found by a housekeeper inside his living room with an apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head.

According to Police Press Officer Rafael Martinez, 39 year old Laura Tun, a housekeeper of the Boca del Rio area of San Pedro Town arrived at around 7:20AM at Faull's residence to conduct routine house cleaning. Tun reported to police that after she entered the house, she noticed Faull in a motionless state and lying on the floor of the front living room.

Later in the morning, San Pedro police visited a two-story concrete home situated on the beach area in the Mata Grande area where the crime scene was processed. Officer Martinez confirmed that an expended 9 millimeter shell was found inside the room which is consistent with the single apparent gunshot wound to the back of Faull's head. Police claimed that no possible motive has been established and San Pedro Police confirmed that there were no visible signs of forced entry to the building.

Later during the afternoon, a team of investigators from Belize City visited the scene along with members of the San Pedro Police Department were the scene was processed a second time. During the process, neighbors were questioned to determine certain information that police believe may assist them in their investigation. Police also questioned a male Hispanic caretaker of Faull's private residence who told police the he did not hear anything out of the ordinary, especially since it had rained during the course of the night.

Residents in the area told The San Pedro Sun that Faull had a misunderstanding with a neighbor in the area and believe that the dispute may have escalated. According to the neighbors, Faull's concerns as it related to the person in question were shared by other residents of the Mata Grande area. Those concerns had to do with armed security intimidating residents along the beach and according to the neighbors in the area, the issue was brought up to the San Pedro Town Council.

The Head of the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) of the Belize Police Department Unit Mark Vidal confirmed to The San Pedro Sun that they are looking for McAfee as part of the murder investigation. Vidal explained that when a team of investigating police officers conducted a search of McAfee's residence, his beach side home next to Faull's home, no one was found.

Although there was no sign of forced entry, a laptop computer and an iPhone were discovered missing. The body of Faull was taken to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) Morgue where it awaits a Post Mortem Examination. No one has been arrested but police remain positive in the course of their investigation and according to Martinez, they are following a number of leads. Anyone that has any information that can assist the police in their investigation are asked to call crime stoppers at 0-800-922-TIPS.

Antivirus pioneer, John McAfee, main person of interest in San Pedro Murder

Gregory Faull

It is by any stretch a huge story tonight which the international media has been following aggressively all day. It involves John McAfee, the US founder of McAfee anti-virus software, who has made Belize his home for years. McAfee's house in Carmelita, Orange Walk, you will recall was raided by the GSU in May, but now McAfee is being sought for questioning for a far more serious charge. He is considered a person of interest in the murder of a US national in San Pedro. Only last Thursday, McAfee made a sizeable donation of equipment to the San Pedro Police formation, but tonight the generous contributor, is a prime suspect, wanted for questioning. News Five's Jose Sanchez reports.

Jose Sanchez

"The sea and the sand are the reasons why tourists come to the island of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. However, the atmosphere seems little affected by the tragedy that occurred over the weekend. Behind me and those idyllic coconut trees inside that home; Gregory Faull, the fifty-two year old Florida native, was shot once to the back of his head. His caretaker last saw him alive around one a.m. on Saturday morning. Twenty-four hours later, his dead body was found in his living room."

The shot that killed Faull would not have been heard by anyone because he lived almost six miles away from San Pedro Town. To get to his residence means driving about forty minutes through a muddy dirt road, through an overgrown and bushy obscure path by golf cart. Faull, a contractor by trade, built the house in which he died. Faull lived alone and his killer or killers passed two doors, including a grilled security door prior to reaching inside. However, the police reported that there was no sign of forced entry into the building.

Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer

"San Pedro Police visited the residence of fifty-two year old U.S. National Gregory Viant Faull of five and three-quarter miles north of San Pedro Town. His housekeeper of Boca del Rio Area, San Pedro, reported that at approximately seven-twenty a.m., she arrived at Mister Faull's home where she saw him in a motionless state lying in a pool of blood. The police were called and the scene was processed where one nine millimeter expended shell was recovered. The body had an apparent gunshot wound to the back of the head. Mister Faull was transported to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead at one-twenty-five p.m."

Jules Vasquez

"We've heard that he had been having an ongoing dispute with his neighbor who also made a substantial contribution to the police department on Friday."

Raphael Martinez

John McAfee

"Well I just spoke with investigating officer and there are several leads that the police are actually following and that of course as you mentioned is one of them. But nothing has been; it has not brought about any tangible conclusions as yet. So the motive has not yet been established."

Jose Sanchez

"Following the murder of American national Gregory Faull, police in San Pedro have detained one man for his murder. They are also seeking American National, John McAfee, for questioning. McAfee is well known because he is the founder of the antivirus that bears his name. McAfee who has a house in the area has not been seen since this incident."

A week ago, on Thursday November eight, McAfee donated some equipment including taser guns and batons to the San Pedro Police Department now the department is seeking him as the main person of interest in this murder investigation. McAfee is no stranger to the law and he was arrested in May 2012 at his compound outside Orange Walk town. The raid conducted by the gang suppression unit resulted in the discovery of "ten firearms-seven, twelve gauge pump action shotguns; one twelve gauge single action shotgun; one Taurus nine millimeter pistol and one, nine millimeter CZ pistol were found. Five air rifles with scopes that resembling sniper rifles that use six point two six millimeter slugs were also found. And two hundred and seventy twelve gauge cartridges. Additionally, thirty nine millimeter rounds and twenty point thirty-eight rounds were also taken." McAfee who had licenses for some of the weapons was not fazed. The Mexican police has been contacted to detain McAfee if he attempts to cross the border of if he is found in Mexico. Meanwhile, Faull's family from South Florida is reportedly making preparations to retrieve his body and repatriate it back to the US. Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Late this evening, a statement by John McAfee hit the internet on wired.com. The author of the article, Joshua Davis, quotes McAfee as saying that he is innocent and that he has been burying himself in the sand with a cardboard box over his head so he could breathe. McAfee tells Davis that, "It was extraordinarily uncomfortable but they will kill me if they find me." McAfee alleges in the interview that Faull was mistaken for him and when he heard the shots, he thought they were coming for him. For more information you can go to wired.com

UCF bar owner killed in Belize

A UCF bar owner was found dead in Belize.

Police have named a suspect in Gregory Faull's murder, John McAfee of McAfee anti-virus. Faull's bar is Tailgater's Smokehouse at UCF, where the news has saddened his patrons.

Patrons say Faull would go table to table in his restaurant and really get to know the people who went there, like Steve Vladyka.

"You know, he'd always sit there and talk to us and he would always come out and spend time to talk with the customer," Vladyka said.

Faull was found laying in his own blood Sunday near San Pedro. Faull was shot in the back of the head and police have identified a suspect -- John McAfee. He's the 67-year-old founder of McAfee anti-virus.

"My heart goes out to his wife. She would also always come over," Vladyka said. "She was a real nice lady and would always come over and talk to us and they always seemed happy together."

Vladyka says Faull loved offshore fishing quite a bit, which could explain the attraction to Belize.

Family of Orlando man killed in Belize 'shocked'

The family of a longtime Orlando resident found shot dead in Belize is "shocked and saddened" by his slaying, the family said in a statement.

"We are shocked and saddened by the murder of Gregory Faull, a loving father, son and brother who will be remembered as an independent, hard working man full of initiative and a love of adventure," it said.

Police in the Central American nation said Monday they are looking for John McAfee -- the founder of the antivirus software company McAfee Inc. -- to question him about the slaying. McAfee lived next door to Faull, 52, who was found with a gunshot wound to his head inside his two-story home north of San Pedro, a town on the island of Ambergris Caye.

"Losing Greg leaves a hole in our hearts and our lives. We urge law enforcement authorities in Belize and internationally to bring those responsible to justice quickly," Faull's family said.

According to the statement, Faull founded a successful construction business, Gregory V. Faull, General Contractor Inc., which worked on commercial projects at Disney World and other theme parks. He later built a bar on the campus of the University of Central Florida, the first on-campus restaurant with a liquor license.

Faull was an adventurer, the statement said, and in recent months used his skills in construction to buy and renovate a hurricane-damaged home in Belize. He had just completed work on the home when he was killed.

Raphael Martinez, spokesman for Belize's Ministry of National Security, described McAfee, 67, only as a "person of interest." No charges have been filed in the case.

"It's too early in the investigation. To say he is a suspect would be a bold statement," Martinez told The Associated Press.

You're exactly right. My condolences to Greg's family and friends and may he RIP. No one should have to go through such a cruel tragedy involving a loved one.

Local man speaks out about stepson's murder in Belize

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - When he visited Belize several weeks ago, Satellite Beach resident BillKeeneye said his longtime stepson, Greg Faull, never expressed any fear orconcern about his life.

Authorities in Belize said Faull's body wasdiscovered Saturday, inside his home in Ambergris Cay by his housekeeper. The 52-year-old man had been murdered, according to police, who said he was lying face up in a pool of blood, with a single gunshot wound to theback of his head.

"When we learned about his murder, it was like a lightning bolt out ofthe blue," said Keeneye of Greg's death. "It was an absolute surprise. The area where helived seemed absolutely safe."

Keeneye said his wife, Greg's biological mother, is takingthe loss particularly hard.

"It's just a terrible shock for her," Keeneye said with a sigh. "To thepoint she cannot really talk to friends, especially friends of Greg's, wherethere was a connection. It's just awful."

Keeneye said he and his wife didn't know Greg's neighbor, three lots down, was millionairesoftware developer John McAfee. He said Greg never brought it up during theirvisit, but he did notice his stepson was annoyed by McAfee's dogs barkingloudly.

"I think it was mentioned a couple of times" Keeneye said. "'Aw there'sthose darned dogs barking again' he would say."

The dogs were the only reported source of friction between the twoneighbors, and one the reasons police want to talk to McAfee about the murder. But investigators said McAfee refuses to come out of hiding totalk. Instead, they said he is making paranoid statements about police toAmerican media. McAfee told Wired magazine's website that he thinks the police aretrying to kill him.

"He's in serious trouble, himself," said Keeneye. "I think he's got somepsychological problems that apparently make him behave in an erratic way."

While McAfee grabs headlines with his bizarre statements, the family of hismurdered neighbor is left grieving with no clear answers. Keeneye said it is importantthat the public also hear about the victim, an adventurous veteran, and entrepreneurwhose love of fishing, and his pet birds, inspired him to move to Belize.

"This is a hard-working, bright young man, that we lost."
