Sergeant Paulino Reyes is in the spotlight once again for yet another shooting, and this time it involves a civilian. The incident happened in the Valley of Peace Village in the Cayo District. The victim is 53 year old Donatilo Canales. Canalez claimed that he was shot by Reyes twice and remains at The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

Canales, from his beside at the KHMH told Channel 5 News on Tuesday November 13th that he was shot by Reyes, who was out of uniform. "Yesterday, I was in my yard. I had just reached from my work and some friends arrived in a vehicle. They said they wanted to have a conversation with me so I came outside. When Mr. Reyes was passing by, I told [waved] him "bye". He stopped the vehicle and asked me why I was doing bad signals to him. I said 'no I am not doing any bad signals, I am telling you bye'. He pushed me on my chest and then he took out his gun and shot my right leg. When I dropped on the floor, then he shot my second leg and then he hit me with the gun on this part of my head. He pointed the gun on my forehead twice and he told me he wanted to kill meHe grabbed me from my shirt, dragged me to back pan of the vehicle and then took me to his mother's house. I was bleeding a lot. I asked him please help me. He told me 'die'," said Canales.

According to the official Police report given by Sergeant Paulino Reyes, an officer attached to Special Branch Unit at the Belmopan Police Station, he was at Valley of Peace village when he saw Donatilo Canales standing on the street side. Canales, who police say is a known drug dealer in the village, was asked by the sergeant to move away from the street because he was loitering. According to Police, Canales allegedly became aggressive and threw a punch at Sergeant Reyes - hitting him in the jaw. According to Sergeant Reyes, he drew his service 9mm pistol and fired a shot at Canales' left leg in self defense. Reyes says that the gun got jammed and he knocked Canales on the head eventually subduing him.

Readers may recall that in March of 2010 Sergeant Paulino Reyes made news after he shot Corporal Gavin Sanchez eight times in the San Pedro Police Barracks which is located behind the San Pedro Police Station. In June of 2011 a coroner's inquest found that Reyes acted in self defense. Police have not indicated if Reyes will be placed under interdiction or if in fact any official police investigation has been launched. Donatilo Canales remains at the KHMH where he is recovering.

Let me get this straight. A known drug dealer waves at a cop (the international hello sign?). Reyes, one of the not so corrupt cops(who can say with certainty?) shoots the known drug dealer in the leg. (He could have aimed higher.) I don't understand about the 2nd shot but again a leg. Then takes the victim to his (the cop's) mother's house.

I always liked Sgt. Reyes; he seemed very professional. But what the heck - we can't even find out who the two cops that rolled the man sleeping (?) in the doorway.

Right now who knows who to trust? And the cops wonder why they are not respected???

Don't forget that people can say what they want, but it doesn't mean that they are telling the truth. When you interview all the prisoners in Hattieville, you will find that most think they are innocent and victims of the police or of incredible coincidences.

A known drug dealer will most likely not wave friendly to the police and say "hello, how are you today sir?" I think Reyes' statement sounds much more plausible.

This incident along with this officer and the other cop who he murdered in 2010 by shooting him 8 times, plus the latest incident in San Pedro of the 2 cops robbing the drunk in broad daylight of his shoes and wallet shows that we have a serious issue with Police conduct and professionalism in Belize.

2 Shootings in as many years good going at least this time the guy did not die but that maybe was because the gun jammed on when he tried to shoot him for a third time.

Police statement states that Reyes said he only shot the guy once in the leg and then hit him with the butt of the gun when his gun jammed.

Funny thing though is that Canales the victim was actually SHOT TWO TIMES ONE IN EACH LEG and the hospital have treated him for 2 gunshot wounds one on each leg and a wound to his head HMMMMMMMMM

So what Reyes is having us believe is that he shot the guy 2 times one in each leg shattering his femurs and Canales was still a threat to him with 2 broken shot up legs so he needed to pistol whip the guy because his gun jammed and he could not get off the third shot.

Guess you were right SHORT Canales must of decided to shoot himself in the other leg and make up the rest of the story too if you think that sounds more plausible LOL whistle

Not only that but it seems after Reyes shot and killed the corporal Sanchez he was actually promoted to special branch.

He will be commissioner of police in no time at this rate.
