After, and during, our trip, i found tempoary relief from the itch by sitting in a REALLY HOT tub of water...atleast i could sleep for awhile. Then woke up itching. Does it ever stop? Like your body becoming immune to them? Can you get rid of them in a room? Where do they live/do they fly? Trying to more inform myself before we lower legs look like small pox!!! C

Ok Guys, listen up... here is the magic potion.....catnip! my dears, catnip oil. Put on exposed area to discourage mosquitos and sand fleas. If you have had the misfortune of being bitten many aleviate the can do a number of things...different strokes for different folks. Soak in a tub of epson salt first. This will clean your bites. Then put some dettol (an anticeptic easily gotten in belize). Or antibiotic cream, or calamine lotion. If you are alergic, be sure to take your benadryl. Make sure you get your cat nip from a reputable herb shop.
To get rid of the pests in a room...turn a fan on full blast, it will literally blow them away. Not a ceiling fan.
MosquitoRose (haha)(bite bite)

munichchick...I still tan in those areas that I had the noseeums/Flying teeth/sandflea bites. Hummmmmm...And let me tell ya, I have had many many of them. My legs should be pure white.
We had several resort owners tell us that you become "immune" to the bites if you stay there long enough. I think one said somewhere in the 6 week period of time. Nothing worked for me either, I just itch !(and itch and itch and itch) Sorry, my fingers got carried away with the memory of them. We took 100% deet with us. Didn't work for me. I just learned to avoid certain times of the day.....early am and dusk. NO BREEZE....and they just wait for a tourist, I know they do.... [Linked Image]
I have yet to see a mosquito on the sea side. I think they let the no seeums get me and wait for the mosquito magnets inland. LOL

r/c they are sandfleas. That is where they hide on you till feasting time.

I found that by using 100% deet but slathering it on to make a real grease slick on my legs and feet seemed to work better. It drowns them or some thing.

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

Barefoot Skinny, I am bringing kids with me in December. Do you think a preventive measure, might be spritzing their feet at the end of day with Windex/ammonia? Honest question, now don't laugh at me. ha ha

Just adding my recent encounter to this thread. Went swimming/sunbathing up north on a nice beach near Portofino. Next day (yesterday) woke up and could barely speak. Thought I had a throat infection. By noon, i was covered in hundreds of red bumps/welts/bites. My friend that went with me had the same thing. Went to the clinic and they say it is just like Peeka Peeka. However, this is not Peeka Peeka and affected my entire body (unusual). I mention this because it looks like what Cherie is describing on her legs. He said I had a bad case of this and thinks it is a kind of bug in the seagrass or something. I am now on medicated soap, medicated cream, medicine twice daily and had a steroid shot. OWWWW! Between this and reading this thread..i will be the fully clothed girl with shoes on swimming in the sea.

I am planning a dive trip to Ambergris Dec 1, 2001. Can anyone tell me the biting bug status this time of is it a major problem, and if so what are the best things to keep them at bay. Do you reccomend any specific meds, or bug remedies to pack?

Jen, that's horrible!! Mine are starting to heal, but i still look like a poster child for small pox from the butt down!! It's NEVER been this bad before! But well worth it!! LOL Will use more preventative measures next time!! Anyone know if you can take something, like garlic pills, to keep them off??? C
