Welcome Barb,

Look above at the top of this page....there is a link for photographs. You'll find some really nice ones of the beaches.

They are mostly sand..close to the waters edge you might find some finely crushed coral. Both walkable barefoot...unless your feet are really tender [Linked Image]

Some areas will have more turtle grass in the water....typically the farther north you go....the less you have. There is a small stretch up north called Habaneros that has turtle grass....but most of the northern areas are clear.

At any point on the island the turtle grass stops when you go out a couple hundred feet....then it's clear. Just be careful about where you swim or snorkel when you are in town as boat traffic is heavy and it's very dangerous.

Have a wonderful trip! [Linked Image]

The beaches at Playa del Carmen and elsewhere in Yucatan Mexico generally have better shore swimming and prettier, wider white sand beaches than those on Ambergris Caye. The reason is that there is a barrier reef offshore of Belize which slows the wave actions which over eons creates wide sandy beaches.

But then San Pedro is so much less commercialized than Playa, Coz and Cancun, much less touristy. San Pedro doesn't have the U.S. franchises, high-rise condos and tons of timeshare touts that have invaded Caribbean Mexico. It's more like Playa or Coz were years ago.

would agree.......Playa and on down the Yucatan coast have nicer beaches basically. But plenty of good stuff on won't be disappointed. And Barefoot Skinny does a great Joke Night Mondays at Fido's.

Freedom of choice--what a concept!

You can walk down to "The Split" - were hurricane Hattie blew a channel through the island, its about a mile North of town. Its very shallow, and little seagrass. I went to Cancun for many years, and while the beaches were more beautiful, it wasn't great swimming, the water was too rough, unless you were close to Cancun Centro. What I like about Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker is that the water is relatively flat near shore and you can actually SWIM, or float around in the water.
