Good luck

Beaches good North and South but you have to swim off the docks as we have turtle grass here and it is definately yucky(spelling) but it is a hell of a place to come - if you want advice figure out you budget and will advise accordingly

barbj, if you are looking for a beach like a Playa del Carmen you will be very disappointed. Also, there are not many places that are even close to the types of accommodations offered at Playa. However, there is so much more ambience than you will ever find at an all-inclusive at Playa. It is an atmosphere unlike anywhere I have been before (or since). I was there 3 times last year and am trying to get there again in Dec.

Then San Pedro is the place for you! You will love it! I like the beaches just fine but lots of others say they aren't much. The swimming off of the beaches isn't all that great because the reef breaks off shore and the washing waves don't come in like they do in Playa. That means there is a lot of sea grass (turtle grass) but you can swim from most any of the docks. Some places have seawalls instead of beach access to the water, so you might not want that. Figure out what budget range you are in, whether you want a condotel, a single room, a pool, whatever and we'll be able to help you pick out what place you'd like and enjoy. Also, if you go to the top of the page and click on Lodgings a bunch of pictures will come up and you can review the websites of resorts. Then after you've picked the ones that look good to you, search this Message Board and you'll be able to read threads, and threads telling of people's impressions of these places. Also, anything by Lan Sluder of Belize First will be very helpful to you during your searching. Welcome to our happy group of SP lovers.

the beaches are nice as far as looking at them. they are beautiful and pretty clean, etc. but it is the swimming that is more difficult.

up north it is more pristine. here are photos from journey's end: (keep in mind it was before the hurricane hit):

however, it was pretty shallow fairly far out (i didn't care, there was a pool too). the water was very clear, and you could kayak out, tie up & swim or snorkel at the bouy, like we did.

swimming off ramon's pier near town is popular with first time visitors.
