The Ministry of Health has started a project to expand the health information system in the western and northern parts of the country. A contract was signed on Thursday with the Belize City-based company Fultec for the provision of just under sixty thousand dollars worth of computer hardware and software to facilitate the expansion. The money for the H.I.S. expansion was secured through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which is funding a project called Salud Mesoamericana. The goal is to help countries achieve their millennium development goals, particularly as they relate to maternal and child health as well and infant mortality and morbidity. Dr. Peter Allen, the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Health says the hope is that the entire network of computers will be fully functional within the next six weeks.
