The wife will still have to return to her country of origin to apply at the local US Embassy for a visa to travel to the US and the decision whether to issue the visa can takes 6 months or more.

Katie -

Are you certain of that requirement? In the Student Visa world it is possible to apply from a third country (assuming you are in that country legally on a different type of visa).

I had sources elsewhere indicate he as going to try that route also. Highly unlikely, IMNSHO.

Student Visas are not that easy to obtain either. Any visa to the US involves an interview and a look at your background, your family etc. If it appears that you do not have sufficient ties to your home country and family to justify you returning after your visit then your visa isn't approved. If you are married to a US citizen it takes about 6 months or so to qualify for a visa to the US.

and sometimes, the interviewing bureacrat just plain doesn't like you and makes something up...like "we don't think your ties are strong enough" or "we don't think this school is right for you" (actually had that latter given to a young man from Mongolia just a year ago). Appeals are a waste of time & $.

The success rates of applicants (esp single males from targeted countries) for F-1 and M-1 student visas has decreased dramatically in the past 12 years.

I think I read somewhere that John McAfee has dual or multiple citizenships. When he said he was in a neutral country, I figured he was in Canada especially since it is a short drive from Portland. I'm sure he's savvy enough to get Sam into this country legally, whether it is via Canada or somewhere in the Caribbean. If they are married, the student visa would only add to the scenario.
