The Corozal Rotary Club has been in existence for approximately 30 years and has brought great improvement to Corozal Town. The group has played an important role in the evolvement of the San Antonio School Snack program, Christmas party for Mary Hill School, Ride Across Belize 2010 and numerous scholarship programs just to name a few. Recently added to the group's already long list of projects, is the restoration of the park in Santa Rita Corozal. The club is carrying out the major project in partnership with the Corozal Town Council, the business community and several International Rotary Clubs including the Rotary Club of Nisru Leduc from Alberta Canada.

Stephen Lindop-International Director Rotary Club of Nisru Leduc.

"We are building it into two pieces: a more attached piece on the south side and a more attached piece on the north side. We are digging all the holes today which is the hard part. We should have that swing set up in the north side up by today and concrete it in and hopefully it sets by the next day. By the time we are done we should have 2 60ft by 30ft playground astride by the basketball. We have been working n Belize from 12 years like in the playground program and we enjoy working in Belize. It is a great country. We have a team of 16 people and we should be done by the end of the weekend. The group of kids that I am with raise all the money and we are spending it all for Belize. It is easy $60,000 Belize but the playground is much more like $250,000 Belize."

Choosing the park was no easy task since there are numerous playgrounds in Corozal that could use a facelift. After consulting with several organizations, however the club decided to improve the Santa Rita Park. Eva Perez is the councillor in charge of parks and playgrounds and today she told us about the council's involvement in the initiative.

"The council is proving snacks and food for the Rotarians. In addition to that we are providing worker so they are out here providing some equipment so making good use of our resources. It's start today and ends on Monday and so we are helping out in whatever we can."

The project comes at a cost of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, money which was raised through numerous fundraisers.

New Playground Equipment at Santa Rita Park

On Fen 25, a short ceremony to inaugurate a new playground at Santa Rita Park was made on Feb 25. A substantial investment estimated at well over $250,000.00 BCY was a gift from The Rotary Club of Edmonton Glendora Canada with partnership from the Corozal Rotary Club and the Corozal Community.

A gathering of school children, neighbours, town council members, Rotarians and invited guests were witness to the newly acquired playground equipment. The Corozal club carried out the major project in partnership with the Corozal Town Council, the business community and several International Rotary Clubs including the Rotary Club of Nisku Leduc from Alberta Canada.

Corozal and the community of Santa Rita are proud in being the recipients of such needed equipment at a time when most of Corozal's Parks do need a facelift. The cost for the equipment and logistics was a significant investment estimated at over $200,000.00 BCY. Neighbours, children and volunteers were just all excited to have come out and assist the Rotarians in installing equipment, painting benches and cleaning the park. The playground was inaugurated with a brief and special ceremony on Feb 25.

Plaques of Appreciation in the restoration process were presented by the Corozal Town Council to Earl Johnson, President of the local Chapter of Rotary, The Rotary Club of Glendora, Edmonton CANADA and the Rotary Club of Nisku-Leduc CANADA. The community of Corozal has forged a great partnership with the Corozal Rotary Club and its international Rotarian partners of Canada. Corozal is certainly proud of this great accomplishment.

Stephen Lindop - International Director Rotary Club of Nisru Leduc Canada stated in his remarks that rotary is about service, youth, building communities and making the world a better place. He thanked the community of Corozal for hosting his group in such a delightful way. It was a pleasure and adventure to come down and work on the playground but the community's hosting and support given will never be forgotten.

Note: We encourage the Corozal Community and the residents of Santa Rita to care for this new children's playground and to report any abuses or damages, to the Corozal Town Council or your Community Policing Unit.
