There does seem to be a power play going on. Tonight we decided to drive from the south end into town to enjoy some of the Easter festivities. As we approached Ramons we noticed there was a traffic stop somewhere ahead as traffic was backed up farther than you could see. After about 10 minutes and very little progress we saw friends headed in the opposite direction. They warned us the stop was still several hundred yards ahead. We decided with all the blocked streets in town and a traffic stop somewhere ahead our best bet was to turn around and forget the trip into town. We approached a couple of traffic wardens standing on the side of the road chatting, and no where near the traffic stop and asked them if was ok to turn around. They said yes, we checked for oncoming traffic and made a u-turn. Oh my God. One of the traffic guys came unhinged. Something about disrespecting his office and that we were only visitors in Belize. We told him we are residents, and all we were doing was turning around as many were doing behind us. He ordered us over to a side street for 20 minutes before he let us pass. As we were leaving we asked for his name, which he refused to give and shouted he was born here and would die here. This is total crap and sadly indicative of the attitude many in power have towards non Belizean born tourists, residents or citizens. I am pleased that the recent acts of police abuse finally resulted in significant, and meaningful changes with the Police force, perhaps it is now time to look at the traffic patrols before they get out of hand.
