Hi - Will be heading to Belize for the first time as a budget traveler (i.e. want to live cheaply in order to dive as much as possible). Any thoughts about staying in Ambergris vs. Caulker for someone on a limited budget? Have checked out Lonely Planet, so I have their recommendations, but wondering if anyone has any advice about cheap accommodations on either Caye. Thanks!!

This is kinda a hard question...

If you have never been to Belize, I would choose Ambergris... There are budget places you can stay at and have the access you need... Give us some more info. and we'll help ya..

Caulker is great, but very slow... just let us know... Thanks, Rick

There is more of everything on Ambergris. However, since you will be diving nonstop you will most likely be too pooped after diving, or have an early get up for you next day of diving to be looking for much late night entertainment. Ambergris is generally higher priced than Caulker.

Caye Caulker has some really low budget varying to moderately high priced places and good reasonably priced dive shops. It tends to attract the young budget traveler, especially the European backpackers on the Central America circuit. It still has a good selection of restaurants and even one disco.

I guess it boils down to budget and how much nightlife you want. There is air and water taxi service between both so you can visit whichever one you don't stay on.

No matter where you go ... There you are!

You might also want to consider a live aboard for a few days, the best of all worlds. Diving, entertainement, accomodations and food.
