We are traveling to Belize in March (the 15th) and are staying in the jugle for 4 days. Do we need to be concerned about snakes on trips. Then we are spending 4 days in the cayes. My husband would like to do some deep sea fishing and reef fishing. Is there anyone you can recommend who is good with reasonable prices. Is there any chartes he can hop on. We will be in the cayes from March 19 to the 23. We appreciate all info. Thanks

You don't need to worry at all. We spent a week at DuPlooys near San Ignacio. We were out every day; horse-riding, hiking, caving, canoing. We saw the odd wolf spider in the caves, but nothing else dangerous. You will be too amazed at the parrots, iguanas and plants to worry about something which is relatively rare.

Snakes and other animals have learnt to avoid people, it usually doesn't do them any good to encounter them!

If you DO want to see some of the more unusual animals ask around and get a good guide. We had Sam at DuPlooys and his wildlife knowledge was unbelievable. He had lived in the jungle all his life. He ran night expeditions looking for Fer-De-Lance and co.

We saw a fer de lance the first night, literally on the driveway of our inn in Cayo...our driver tried to run it over. So needless to say, we spent the whole rest of the time there looking down, watching where we were walking!

seriously, we only saw one snake, it was at the inland blue hole (not the one in the ocean). it was a green water snake of some kind. we were in up to our ankles when it "fell" out of a tree across the river and *splash*, he was gone. our hearts were pumping, tho. it was worth it to have those tiny fishies tickling my ankles.

and did you see, tammy d, that i live less than 10 minutes from you? i am at 611 and almshouse.

That property I sold up near Altun Ha had Tommygoffs on it, but contrary to the local lore, they don't seem that all that intent on "dropping out of the trees" to bite the unsuspecting tourist...of course, I'm not selling travel insurance, either!!

I lived "back a bush" for nearly 3 years. Never bitten. But I did see many snakes,(most of them harmless). I did have the luxury of spending time with one of Belize's top herpatologists(Jacob Marlin),while at Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. He's still in the bush at BFREE in Punta Gorda. He keeps rattle snakes and Tommy Goffs,(Fer De lance), as study companions. "You have nothing to fear but..."
