We hear the beach walk up by Bacalar Chico is really nice...

Is it safe to head up there to walk the beach?

NYC, if you are staying at Coco Beach it is a very long walk to Bacalar Chico, about 10-12 miles.

Here is link to a mileage chart that will help you:

scroll down the page to the chart.

Info on Bacalar Chico:

Safe but triple the mileage chart by weaving on the beach. Not a practical idea.

Also, can we rent a golf cart to get into town from coco?

I noticed that coco beach is not on the map? Too new? further north than the map covers?

Coco Beach is 3 miles north of town.
Can easily travel by rented cart.

Bacalar Chico tours can be arranged by the hotel staff - not so far from El Secreto where you will spend some time as well, so maybe ask if they can arrange something.

New Facilities Inaugurated at Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve

Designated on August 1996, The Bacalar Chico National Park covers 12, 640 acres and the adjacent marine reserve covers 15, 529 acres. It is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The facilities that were inaugurated on Friday, March, 14, 2014, were an Ecological and Educational Center and lodging facilities for overnight visitors. Since the Bacalar Chico National Park is very remote, developing this area as a tourism attraction will help to diversify the tourism product for visitors to Ambergris Caye. Further, provision of the facilities will give visitors a more prolonged exposure to the park's resources and attractons. The investment in tourism infrastructure within the National Park and Marine Reserve has been made with the aim of assisting day-to-day park management activities through increased revenue generation as well as contributing to research efforts.
