At the risk of offending many V.H. supporters, let me add my impressions after a recent visit. We stayed in a Casita which was, in itself, adequate. The thatched ceiling is high which made the small air conditioner inadquate. The ocean breeze made the rooms cool at night but blew the mosquito netting around making it worthless. The casitas are too close and they each have a screen door that slams shut, so that when neighbors come and go, you hear them. The gardening staff was outside the casitas every morning at 0700 raking and making noise, making sleeping in impossible.
The beach is nice, but like all of them on the island it's muddy and you'll get stuck if you walk into the water. Nice pier, swimming area at end.
Part of the reason we decided to stay was because of the renowned service, which we were not impressed with. The bar was generally empty, but every time we went in to order a drink, the bartenders acted as if we were disturbing them. If you like drinks by the pool, be prepared to get out and get them yourself, there is no poolside service. Speaking of the pool; it's cold. The food is good, but there are many better places in town. Avoid the breakfasts. They are greasy and each item tastes vaguely of fish. Lastly, if you are at all interested in staying up later, and meeting up with friends to party with, this is not a good place for it. Most of the clentele during our stay were in their 70's. It is a beautiful property, no doubt, but not worth the price of staying there, in my opinion. Next time we come down we will stay at Ramons or Banyan Bay.
