"Polar vortex" hits San Pedro Belize
I have not checked the temp, temp but sitting here with cold hands n feet and I am wearing socks. It feels crazy cold today, there is a strong wind that has been howling off and on all morning. In addition to a hoodie and long pants, I have a bandana on and airline blanket while working at my desk. I also pulled out our comforter for later and we switched our evening plans and invited Matt to watch basketball at our house instead of going to Lola's and watching it on their League Pass. I am far too cold to leave the house today and Paul just wanted to come home after work and relax. Before long in our back and forth in fb messenger about tonight, Matt and I got talking about the weather. He linked me to what he was reading - U.S. Midwest, Northeast hit by bitter cold temperatures and What is a polar vortex? Both good articles. The second one has easy to understand graphics and a short write up about the cold snap that is gripping North America as cold Arctic air moves south. He is probably right in his assumption about it causing our frosty weather, it sure feels like the "Polar vortex" has hit San Pedro Belize.

The Polar Vortex Moves into Belize And It's Kinda Beautiful
Ha. I'm not even sure what a polar vortex isbut the US News stations are ALL ABOUT IT right now. Temperatures at ridiculous levels like -65F. The Weather Channel asks: How cold can it get? Brrrrr-meggedon 2014. Late afternoon yesterday, the storm system moved from the north across Belize and it made for a dramatic sunset after what had been a gorgeous afternoon in San Pedro. The day at about 2pmhigh 70s and warm sun. As I walked/ran to town yesterday a big orange cloud crept southwardand boats raced back to town to beat it.

On Ambergris this morning the Northerner is still on us with the wind at 14mph. It seems to be waning and the expected high today is 72f.

From Belmopan...

I measured 62°C ( 16°C ) last night minimum. . . .. .Drizzle & light rain much of the night due to the cold, totalling only 3.2mm ( 1/8" ) rain.

Second real cold front of the winter down to 62°F.
28Nov13 got down to 64°F

The Caribbean E wind is fighting the cold front, which is dissipating, but resulting in a large area of rain, which will probably effect central and or southern Belize later today or tonight.

More from Belmopan...

That rain area approaching central / southern Belize this morning, has been slowing down and now appears to be be backing off slightly.

I suspect due to the significant SW wind we are experiencing over Belmopan now.

More rain areas have been developing further out in the Caribbean and moving towards Mexico, but these have been breaking up as they move.

This is all associated with that dispersing cold front we had yesterday.

So it is looking as if little or no rain today, although we have been experiencing very light rain and drizzle, which is not showing up on the Radar.

I do not expect tonight, to be as cold as last night.

You should be aware that the apparent Rain movement, is not necessarily the same direction as the actual Wind. Because the surface wind and high up winds can be in different directions. . . .

And the causes of Rain, might be a function of other things, so not necessary tied to the actual wind. But caused by temperatures, heat radiation from sea or land, or Sun.

Which is why we more often see rain over the sea and coastal regions. . . .At other times, over the mountains

It was so bad at noon the workmen would rather skip lunch then head out. Lucky for them I just happened have some left over beans and rice is easy. I even found a big fat sausage for each of them.
The pond once again overflowed and a neighbor returned a turtle who had managed to get out last week. Always something here - never tire of talking about the weather.
