Hi everyone - I can't seem to find any posts on health insurance coverage for expats in Belize. I'm investigating BUPA and IMG but they seem pricey. I'm healthy but interested in coverage in the event of a "big issue" versus day to day check-ups etc. Also, want to look into the air-lift options... If the shxt really hits the fan can you get air-lifted from San Pedro (to Mexico or US) or do you have to get to Belize City to get flown somewhere with advanced treatment facilities.

BTW - I could've sworn I'd read about this in a previous post but when using the search tool - no such luck (lots on ObamaCare under "health insurance".

Thanks

The citizens of the United States are concerned about health insurance because its so expensive you can be financially ruined by it easily.
Thats not as true in the rest of the world so the US folks are obsessed with health insurance, the rest of us not.

Belize doesn't offer the full package you are looking for. There are many companies that offer Major Medical Plans for people not living in the US. Day to day doctor visits can easily be covered out of pocket here and usually count towards your Major plan's deductbable. I'll dig up my reps' contact and PM you. He doesn't work with one provider but can help direct you to what suits you best.

There's been plenty of discussion in the past unfortunately the "Daily Crap Site" has diluted the search engine so much that it's impossible to do a search and find anything related to Belize.

Most people that do have insurance here have BUPA/IMG.

If your situation was critical enough to require evac, assume you would already have been flown to Belize City emergency room, where local docs confer with insurance docs to approve the air amb.

Thanks all for your help. Couple questions - so I take it there's medivac to Belize City health care but not to anywhere else direct (I don't have health issues but wanted to understand the process if myself or visitors have a serious issue).

Also, I'll get a hold of Craig at Global regarding health insurance. I do understand that basic health care costs are dramatically less in Belize versus US. The health insurance policy is really more disaster - in the event of heart, big c etc.

Thanks again!

JZB - I spoke with Craig - nice guy. Are you using IMG? (He also mentioned WorldWide Expat Ass.) If you are using IMG - have had good experience with claims or know of others that have really had to use it? Both companies mentioned above are considerably less $$ than BUPA (and have lower deductibles)

Thanks

Our 2 cents worth: We have IMG and are very happy with them....We are 50+ and the rates are great ....We took the US exempt option and saved thousands...... Fortunately we have not needed to use our insurance...We also carry DAN WORLD as a supplement insurance for a diving or travel emergency......Both companies have been responsive & helpful with questions about coverage and major event issues.....at about $50usd per month per person for both.

I am very knowledgeable in this field. Go with IHI (owned by BUPA). Great coverage, good people, reasonable decisions. If I can help let me know.
