The San Pedro Junior Sailing Club wins both Buttonwood Bay and Baron Bliss Harbor Regattas

It was an exciting weekend for sailing clubs from across the country as they traveled to Belize City to participate in the annual Buttonwood Bay and Baron Bliss Harbor Regatta. Both regattas are Belize Sailing Association (BzA) national ranking regattas and all the sailors were out for the win. But it was San Pedro Junior Sailing Club (SPJSC) who took the grand first place trophy for both regattas.

Held on Saturday, March 8th, the Buttonwood Bay Regatta was hosted by the Belize Sea Scouts. 49 young sailors participated in a series of six races in the optimist class. Participating clubs included SPJSC, Sea Scouts, Belize City Sailing Club (BCSC), Corozal Bay Sailing Club (CBSC), Placencia Sailing Club (PSC) and San Pedro Sailing Club (SPR). The competition was fierce but in the end it was Jerdon Anderson from SPJSC who took the first place prize with 13 points. Second place went to Antonio Ricardez Jr. of BCSC with 15 points, followed by Blanca Vasquez of SPJSC in third place, also with 15 points. Christian Trejo of SPJSC came in fourth place with 18 points and Kevin Velasquez of SPJSC took fifth place with 22 points. Top ten sailors for the Buttonwood Bay regatta included: Gorge Olivarez (SPR) in 6th, Trent Hardwick (Sea Scouts) in 7th, Nashira Ricardez (BCSC) in 8th, Faith Noel (SPJSC) in 9th and Jasmine Campos (CBSC) in 10th. Other participating member of the SPJSC include: David Puc in 11th, Samantha Vasquez in 18th, Beverly Medrano in 20th, Kathryn Salinas in 23rd, Katie Maxson in 27th, Lucy Veralls in 32nd, and Gabbi Knox in 36th. SPR members include: Sarah White in 14th, Mitchell Sersland 15th, David Syme in 47th and Caroline Sersland in 48th.

On Sunday, March 9th, the 86th annual Baron Bliss Harbor Regatta was held as part of the opening events for Reef Weeks. The regatta was presided over by Governor General Sir Colville Young. The Baron Bliss Harbor Regatta consisted of four races with 47 participating sailors in the optimist class. Once again SPJSC claimed the first place as Kevin Vasquez took the win with three points. Second place went to Antonio Ricardez Jr. of BCSC with seven points. The Belize National Sailing Association optimist national sailing regatta series now has just under 50 participants (between the ages of 8 - 16 years) and soon the fleets will be expanded by an additional 13 optimist dinghies. There are 7 clubs from around the country that get together 5- 6 times a year for these national regattas as well as occasionally for friendly invitational meets.

There are two clubs operating on the island, San Pedro Sailing Club and San Pedro Junior Sailing Club.

With the cadet sailors now "aging" out of the optimist program we will soon see some focus moving on up to "laser" sailing. Currently there are 2 racing lasers and we will see this fleet growing in numbers this year.

If you have an interest in sailing, whether it is learning how to sail, volunteering to assist with sailing programs, joining as spectators, or making a donation or sponsoring the boats and sailing programs, please contact your local sailing club.

If you would like contact information please send me a private message or view the club pages on Facebook.

Let's support our local clubs. This keeps the kids off the streets and focuses their energy into individual competition and personal improvement, building confidence and fostering a love for our natural resources.
