Hello everyone!!! How bad do the mosquitoes get in the middle of May? This will be our first trip to Belize/AC and my Mom has come across an article about Bot Flies... She's terrified of being bit by a mosquito and getting Bot Flies!!! smirk Please help me to reassure not to worry so!!!!! grin

Some people are bothered by them more than others. Myself, I have very rarely been bitten. there is usually enough of a breeze to keep them away. If you go up north in the more wooded areas you may have some. As always it depends on how much rain there has been at the time. May is not in the rainy season. I have been down many times and most people with me get by the full week with a small can of OFF or as I do, nothing at all.

I've lived here 22 years and never had a bot-fly.
Most of the year I never use mossie spray - some days in September and October being exceptions.
Bot fly stories are often told by people who like to creep other people out. Successfully it seems.
Mom has a vivid imagination - probably could be put to better use imagining sunrises, coral reefs and brilliant starry skies.

Well that sounds encouraging!!!! I will pass the info on to Mom.... What is Mossie spray? We are staying at La Perla Del Caribe in the North - Is that the mosquito part of the North? LOLOL!!!!

And I'm picturing all of the beautiful sites instead on an ugly Bot Fly!!!! smile

I was on the mainland at a jungle type resort (Maruba) when I got bitten by a "Doctor Fly". I think they are the most vicious of all flying insects. She actually bitt me about 3 times before taken off. My hand swelled up and it was very painful and itchy for days. Never seen any on the Island........and don't want to

Mossie spray = mosquito spray. Mossie is another word for mosquito.

We've been to Belize about 20 times at all times of the years and my wife got bit by mosquito (bot fly) once. That time we were at several lodges in the mainland, not on Ac.

mosquitoes and bot flies are two distinct creatures.

Unlike Diane I am fresh meat when it comes to the bugs. A good product developed and tested in Belize for the US military is 3M Ultrathon lotion. Its a slow release low deet formulation that we use all the time. Once in the morning and once at night and I'm bite free. Do not get the spray or the dabbing applicator as they frankly suck and don't seem to be anywhere near as effective.

As to Bots,my recollection from talking to the former owner of the Pretty See Resort/Ranch is that they are primarily mainland critters.
